I thought this might be the right place for this fellow's thesis on the subject of the KJV Preface.

I'm not going to debate about versions. I just read this and thought it was good.:1_grouphug:

I came across this piece about 6 months ago. It is good. Of course E.J. Goodspeed had his own New Testament version published in 1923.Dr. Goodspeed was a rank liberal, but he had a good grip on a number of things regarding the KJV(or B).

The KJVO movement was actually in progress long before the early 1960's as he demonstrates.

Here are some snips from his 1935 essay.

"self-constituted champions of the king James[Bible]"

"they [habitual readers of the KJB]are actually unconscious that there is any more ultimate form of the Bible to translate or consult."

[Regarding belief in the verbal inspiration of the KJB]:This extraordinary view is very widely held."

"But of course the greatest illusion about the King James Bible is that it is the sole, unique, divine Bible, untouched by human hands. This doctrine, grotesque as it is, is actually held as a matter of course by the vast majority of people."

"One of the most unfortunate things about the adherents of the King James version is their antipathy to scholars. They regard them with grave suspicion."

Goodspeed notes the "marked obscurity of the own version."

"The superstitious veneration with which some very pious people regard it..."

Time to revive this thread. I just wanted to note that KJVO'ism started long before the 1950's.

The loyalty to the NIV I have come across is just as weird as the loyalty to the KJV.

...One reason I am no longer IFB, and that I now use, teach and preach from and carry the NASB, (although I still use KJV in study at times.)

I think it was recognized at least as early as 1826, when Campbell wrote --
So badly taught are many christians that they cannot think that any translation of the scriptures deserves the the title of the Word of God except that of king James. ...

So we are at it again. As you wish. When you lie and slander,I will call you on it. You have said sinfuly wrong things and I have called you to account. You still evade the truth whenever it strikes you to do so.

The subject is KJVO. Dr.Goodspeed detected it in the early 20th century. We can talk about the origins of KJVOism and/or the Goodspeed translation. Have at it.

    Rippon,

Interesting reading. Would I be wrong to say that although KJVO was detected early in the 20th C. it was not until the 1970's that it was strongly promoted by J.J. Ray, David Cimino, and others, and gained a foothold in the IFB movement?

Thanks, Rippon. I agree that KJVO was DETECTED much earlier, but my contention was that it was not until the the late 1970's that it became a real issue of contention in the USA amongst Baptists. Perhaps I am wrong, but it was during that period that Ruckman, Cimino, etal came to the forefront in IFB circles, at least.
