Mandatory mission trips

    Should churches require their members to be involved in mission trips (this includes local, state, domestic, and international)?

    No because not everyone is called to do that sort of work.

    I do agree with you on that but I think the typical belief is that a "missions trip" is traveling somewhere outside of your regular culture.

    Of course our pastor has challenged (and will be challenging again this week) our congregation to do a one year missions trip. They don't have to move from home, they don't need to leave their neighborhood, they don't need to leave their jobs, but they DO need to leave the comfort of their home church. He's asking them to become one year missionaries at the new church plant. :D We'll see what the response is this week. Last week our pastor challenged people to take a week of the expense of the hotel ($500) for the church and his goal was 52 weeks which would be $26,000. Well, we had over 85 people come forward and we already have $19,000!!!! Wow!! So we've got a lot of missionary supporters so far. :)

    Very good!

    Are there churches that actually require members to go on mission trips? Heard of strongly urging but not requiring.

    I voted 'No', because that's the way I'm leaning, but I'm not so sure.

    So, Jesus came to the eleven disciples and told all of them "teach all nations". He didn't single anyone out, he didn't tell some to teach all nations and others not to teach all nations. He told them all to teach all nations.

    We've taken that verse and turned it into something more palatable for us. We've taken it and made it to read that teaching all nations can be done by giving money to missionaries. I don't see where the verse tells us that. It is a direct command to the disciples for them to teach all nations.

    Most here would agree that this command to the disciples also applies to us, so why do we dismiss the "all nations" part as applying to us?

    Um, no. Actually a church would be much more productive to encourage people to increase their support of current missionaries than to spend so much money to visit for a week or two.

    Just my opinion.

    And SOOOOO many missions trips are really vacations in disguise. Where the missionary is to show the team around to the sites, they go to the beach, are entertained, etc. We won't do those sorts of trips. Our missions pastor is WHOLLY against them. We go, we work. End of story.

    Our church has been helping out at a mission project so of Juarez. I don't think it is helping the locals (cargo cult syndrome) but I support it because it opens the eyes of the young people to the goodness and wonders of the US, the best place in the world.

    I would have voted yes but a better option would have been to phrase the question should churches pay for members missions trips

    I've heard this before - about the vacation, but the ones I've been on and the ones that I know anyone that went on were very hard work. Everyone came home wonderfully full and terribly pooped.

    This certainly happened to my oldest son - that appreciation of the USA. He'd already been on several when it hit him that he resided in a really wonderful nation.
