Our new church plant has a name and logo!

    We've settled on a name and have a logo for the new church plant my husband is doing. Well, it's not really a new church plant but a new church campus plant. LOL It will be a second campus of our church but since our church is named with our village, it won't really work to use the same name in another town.

    So the new name is Island Christian Church. Here's the logo:

    It's so exciting to be a part of this work that God is doing!

    The name of your "main" church is Northport Baptist Church. Just wondering why you guys have dropped Baptist from the name?

    Well, we have two reasons:

    #1 - There is Long Island Baptist Church that is in the next town. It's an IFB/KJVO/women in skirts-only church. Our name would have been too close if it were "Island Baptist Church".

    #2 - After a ton of discussion, it was decided to not use the "Baptist" name in the main name of the church (in information, it will be stated that we're a campus of Northport Baptist Church) because "Baptist" has SUCH a negative connotation here on Long Island. Seriously, we've spoken to people who would have come to our church but when they heard it was "Baptist" (we're not part of any convention, however - fully independent), they refused to come - even for a play or something. We're not looking to trick people but we're looking to take away something that would be a stumbling block to them. We'll still be standing with the Baptist distinctives which will be clearly posted in our paperwork, website and such and, like I said, we're a second campus of Northport Baptist. We COULD have used Northport Baptist but Northport is the name of the village that our church is so it would be weird to have Northport in Holtsville. :) So, we went with "Christian Church".

    Thanks for the info. I'm not a big fan of dropping Baptist from the name, but can understand your reasons. Of course, in my area I don't believe that Baptist holds the same stigma that you are saying it carries in your area.

    No - Down south it's totally different. Around here, you might as well say that your pastor is Fred Phelps. It has about the same stigma. Seriously.

    My first thought was "Christian Church" which is a group/movement that is not too doctrinally straight at times. I grew up in one and never heard the gospel.

    Around here, there are numerous "Community" or "Christian" but are not part of a group at all. I've not heard that there's a "Christian Church" group. That's interesting.....

    Hmmm - I know the pastor and his family from the Church of Christ in Commack. His two sons are my son's best friends. They're a wonderful family. Don't know anything about the Huntington Church of Christ other than they are down the road from where I grew up.

    The East Northport Christian Church is nearby (kind of between my home and our church but about a mile east of the normal way I drive). I don't know much abut them other than they had a woman "evangelist" so we never got involved with them.

    Both of these are quite far from us - not near us at all. Flushing is part of New York City and about 45 minutes from here. Bridgeport is across Long Island Sound and we need to take a ferry to get there.

    I know I've heard of Christian churches but I never knew that there were organizational Christian churches. Thanks for the info!

    Churches of Christ

    Movement--Restoration Movement

    Developed from the Cane Ridge Meeting House and a long protracted meeting at that place around 1803-1804--Leaders: Thomas Campbell, Alexander Campbell, and Barton W. Stone. Their theology is called "Stone-Campbell Theology," or "Restorationism."

    At least four denominational groups developed--

    Churches of Christ (very conservative, baptismal regenerationist, amillennial, very Arminian, no instrumental music)

    Independent Christian Churches--virtually the same except for ICC churches use instruments.

    Christian Church/Disciples of Christ--very liberal version.

    Cumberland Presbyterian Churches--middle of the road theology

    A significant cult, The University Churches of Christ, developed in Boston MA thirty or so years ago.

    I was raised as a child in a Stone-Campbell church; even made my "hadj" to the old meeting house, which is carefully preserved in a larger building, and had communion there.

    I am a Baptist these days.

    If you draw a line from Lexington, KY to Fort Worth, TX, about 80% of the Restorationists in the world are 150 miles either side of that line.

    Major B is right. I would live on that line and you have many of those folks in Baptist clothes too in my neck of the woods.
