This is an actual post I ran across on a blog about the new Health Care Bill.

What if millions decide to do this? Do you think many persons will do this?

Of course, I believe forcing someone to buy insurance and fining them if they don't is unconstitutional.

Having said that, if it becomes law, the fine,at 2 1/2 % of gross income, is much too low , and millions of the young and healthy that will be needed in such a plan to keep it solvent, will do just that...pay the fine.

And laugh at the rest of us as we struggle to pay the increasing premiums and copays.

How utterly stupid. One catastrophic injury and they are toast. Period.

My husband cleaned the gutters one Saturday morning. He fell off the roof. The cost of that? $65,000 and a lifetime of pain and disability.

A dear friend of mine is just recovering from 6 weeks of ulcerative colitis and C.Diff. She was in the hospital for 28 days in 4 different hospitalizations during that 6 weeks. That will definitely be over $100,000.

You NEVER know what's going to happen and for now, this woman has no health insurance coverage at all. She's totally cutting off her nose......oh no wait - that would cost too much to repair. LOL

Ann, I agree with you, it certainly is taking a foolish risk. But obviously the person who wrote this is willing to take it.

And if our recent financial crisis has shown anything, many seemingly very intelligent people will take foolish risks.

The problem is, every person who does this means less money going into the plan, which will drive the price up for those who do buy insurance. But the increased rates will tempt more people to opt out as this person has chosen to do. It's a vicious circle.

Yep - It's a well thought out government plan, isn't it?

Yes, but under the "new" plan you don't have to purchase insurance until you need it. They cannot turn you down for preexisting conditions. So, all you have to do is apply when the cancer diagnois comes down and not before then. Or the spouse can do it for you as the ambulance is rushing you to the hospital. This plan is stupid and will be the demise of traditional insurance who in no way can sustain their profitability accepting people with preexisting conditions.

So, this fellow is pretty smart then. He is saving his money and making interest on it. He can pay for check-ups and minor medical procedures from his savings. Turns out he has cancer or some other major problem, sign up, they can't turn you down.

Doesn't cover accidents. However, what is to prevent going down the next day and buying insurance? You are seriously hurt and in the hospital for weeks. You would have to pay for day one. But a family member could go the next day (or even the same day) and buy insurance, they can't turn you down. Insurance will pay from then on out. You might be able to call yourself from your hospital bed and secure insurance over the phone or go online. You could pay with your credit or debit card. Who knows?, the folks at the emergency room might give you time to call for insurance before they begin treatment.

    Wow.

I had health insurance (either personal pay or employer provided) until the beginning of 2006, at age 58. In all those years, I never used it, until the last 5 years of employment when the plan had a co-pay for annual visits, some lab co-pays..... and supposedly a medication discount... which I found to be worthless but a way to keep the insurance company informed of any prescribed medications... even though I paid full price.

The last 18 months was the bonus when I first met a medical deductible... however, as I was unemployed, and cannibalized my retirement to pay my COBRA, and had cancer, surgery and treatments.... all paid for as I had kept my insurance. But, lest anyone think I was smart in this deal.... no way. I've never been keen on seeing a doctor without cause... and have trusted God to provide for my wellness and to make me conscious of safety and good health practices. When I was unemployed and saw that I could not draw unemployment... and debated over whether to cannibalize beyond mere survival on savings to keep my COBRA, I prayed for guidance and then followed what seemed right.... the agreement of faith and 'my gut'. Ha.... ha!

Who knows..... maybe I could have dropped my COBRA and maybe God would have prevented my cancer, which was asymptomatic and diagnosed 5 months into the plan? What he did do was enabled me to live on my savings and stretch it so that I did not draw any public assistance... not even food stamps... and roof my house after a storm damaged my uninsured house..... until I made it to my widow's social security. My husband died 15 years ago. He would have been able to draw his full social security by now had he lived.

I did not know the markets.... but God knew my needs. It seems that by trusting him and stretching my leanness... those withdrawals which I made at irregular times and in various measures, were just right with the market timing even though I had tax penalty's to pay on an income for which there was no standard deduction.

Now I hear social security is broke, and a part of me entertains my own responsibility for drawing mine against the demands on the public purse. But I look back on years where I thought this day might come.... and where I tried to encourage others to think beyond these same programs which were used to manipulate their political fears and voting choices, and how I tried to save on a very modest income: And then I think of how the Israel 'children' were led out of Egypt by God, and instructed, before their departure, to 'borrow' from their slave-masters and mistresses the Egyptian wealth of goods and jewelry to take on their journey: It was the wages of their enslavement of former times: For some it was a snare which built the idol in the wilderness... and they and it were destroyed.... but for others it was a joyous offering which could serve no other purpose but to adorn that wonderful tabernacle which reminded them of God's presence.

I don't know what plans God has for us in all of this... but, I do believe we can trust Him that His timing is perfect. We may suffer because social security is withdrawn or cut back,..... we cannot know... but his will is perfect concerning us. We may see the benefit and use of this health care program.... or suffer rationed care and have to minister to those who may be hurt by coerced abortions, or delays in medical care, or faulty diagnosis and treatments and medication errors by overworked and under trained practitioners. The true light is Jesus, and any other is an imitation. If He is in us.... and we abide in Him.... he will dispell the darkness though it deepens around us. The darkness in this world cannot overcome His power within us..... though our faith may target us for suffering, and there may be yet many which the Father calls, and many of us who can still be used to the glory of his eternal kingdom.

These things which trouble us so deeply, do so because we have little power left to slow the progress of the troubles we see coming in however long the future may be, and because we have no power over the wills of others to hasten their conversion or to save them. We cannot know how long God will grant us opportunity to witness to others and tell them about Jesus. Life, itself, is short when one looks back over the many years now passed, so, it matters not if 'the end' is near or far distant: We have not been good stewards of the garden which God entrusted to us.... and too many trees have grown crooked and weak and deformed with the sickness of this world cankered in their good wood: the fences were not repaired in the seasons of small decay, and now they crumble too many to build up; we have taken on the customs of this world and treat each other unkindly. It is hard to pray 'God have mercy on us' when I must first pray with utmost humility 'God, please have mercy on me.' Knowing that he already has and his promise is already fulfilled...... still ..... I see this as 'now' when God sees it as 'done', I see it as unfinished .....where God said 'it is finished' ..... I view the future as 'tomorrow' but God sees everything as completed and past and no more tomorrows but only today....forever today, a view I cannot comprehend.
    ======
Back to the OP: No doubt there will be many who try to make the best of what comes and hope they figure it out right. Man has a plan..... and often shuts God out. God has a plan....... and draws folks to Him. Each plan goes in different directions. I'll always be secure, even though my feelings may say not if I can keep my eyes fixed on the captain of my soul and keep my mind fixed on him.

From 1 Timothy 5:8 - "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, especially for the members of his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an infidel ."

Borrow enough for the first payment from a friend or family member, go online and immediately purchase health insurance on the child, they can't refuse to insure you. As soon as the child is well, let the coverage lapse by not making future payments.

Yes, it may be foolish, but you can bet many people will quickly learn how to work the system like this.

Sounds like a good plan to me. That's what I'll probably do especially if the premiums continue to rise.

when I was reading the OP, I thought good luck to ya! My youngest was very active and I can't count the number of times we took the child to the emergency room for a bone to be set or a gash to be cleaned out and stitched up. And those are rather routine compared to what could have happened. Still - much more than $100 out of pocket expense even with insurance.

I think it's foolish, but I'm also not in the business of telling people what they do and don't have to buy.
