Leave it at 18. You can go overseas and get shot for your country, but you can't vote for the guy who conscripted you over there?

    Strange.

When the age was lowered to 18 the first thing I predicted would happen would be a movement to lower the drinking age to 18 . . . old enough to get drafted into the Army, old enough to drink. Turns out that lowering the voting age has had no political effect on US elections. The young people seldom vote and the old people always vote.

I think 18 is a good age. However, remember it is up to the states as long as it complies with the U.S. Constitution. Some states, like South Carolina, allow 17 year olds to vote in a primary election if they will be 18 by the time of the general election. Also, states could allow non-citizens to vote, and some have done so in the past, but none do now.

I'm a young person and I always vote. When people don't vote, it makes me angry because it shows that they don't care.

I noticed Obama wants to rase the legal age of dependency for healthcare up to 26. I don't think I want anyone that's still tied to mama's apron strings to be voting on who is going to preside over the expenditure of my tax money.

You can go overses and get shot for your country, but you cant vote in Congress until you are 25.

PS - There are no conscripts currently in a combat zone. The last draftee was dischared just before Christmas in 1974.

Yet it could be reinstated. The Selective Service registration is still required.

But the FACT is there is currently no draft!

On the other side, a teen can get a licence at age 16, even though he cant vote.

One point I am trying to make is the ole arugmenet what you cant do, but can still fight just doesnt fly with me.

    Salty,
You keep up on current events pretty well. Do you see a situation where the draft could be resumed any time in the near future?

Compromise: You can't vote until 25 unless you are drafted.

Thank you for the complement, though I don't think I stay that up to date.

But as far as the draft - I don't think the military actually wants one.

First, many of the Army MOS's are very technical (even something simple as supply) Since a draftee only serves 2 years, by the time he finishes training, he is liable to be half way thur his commitment.

Second, many draftees simply do not want to be in the military - and that just causes additional problems.

Third, the image is better for the military if there are no draftees.

Fourth, if there is a draft - many join the Reserves or National Guard just to avoid active duty. and they would probably be less productive - With the draft, the Reserves and NG would not be utilized as they are now.

Fifth, A President would not want to activate a draft for political reasons, short of a national emergency ( ie WW II )

I am sure there are more but I hope this is a start

Then you miss the point entirely. If I am being forced by my government to go to war for it, I should have a say in that government. In principle it's the same as taxation without representation.

There is a serious push going on right now to get young men to register. I hear it at least 15 times in an 8 hour work shift on the radio at work. It is really spooky, I haven't hear it like this in a long time.

A draft would interesting because females have demonstrated that they can now be assigned to any military specialty including Admiral. Would the NOW file a law suit to be included?

How about a law that states if you do not make enough to pay taxes then you can't vote, this would exclude retirees or spouses where they have paid SS and Medicare through the sweat of their brow. I am against those on welfare directing their votes in order to get more of someone else's earned funds.

My idea is more along the lines of a test -- you must pass a test showing you are capable of understanding what you are doing and what government does, before you can vote, age not withstanding. Or maybe this should be reserved for the CANDIDATES!
