"Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) while questioning the Navy's Pacific Fleet commander, Adm. Robert Willard, at a March 25 Armed Services Committee hearing, Johnson worried that the island of Guam might capsize if we put a few thousand more people on it - because it's only 7 miles across at its "least widest" point. Johnson later explained that he was speaking metaphorically..." from a you-tube video.

This is the very same person who voted for the Health Care Reform bill every time the bill was up for a vote.

There has been talk as to his mental stability, with some reports hinting that Johnson may be mentally unable to carry out his duties as a U.S. Congressperson.

    My question is two-fold:

    1) Should the Repub's look into his mental competence, and whether he was able to carry out his duties when he voted on the final version of the HCR that set it into law???

    2) If he were to be found mentally incompetent, should his vote be removed from the final count???

I ask these questions only because I've heard several news commentators question his mental competence while making that comment at a March 25 Armed Services Committee hearing.

It was a strange, and "alarming" question coming from an elected official, and there have been some talk that Johnson should under go psychiatric evaluation to assess his ability to discharge his duties in Washington on behalf of his constituents and the nation overall.

IMHO, when I first seen the video, I thought this guy was "kidding around" until I looked more closely at his facial expressions, and observed that he was "dead" serious.

So, what do you think? Should a member of the Legislature be mentally competent to discharge their duties, and if they are found not to be competent, should their votes be dis-allowed, especially when the vote he cast is on a bill that is so important to the financial existence of this nation?

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

My mom used to talk about the senator from Virginia who won re-election even though he was in bed, terminal with cancer. He had not been able to attend any Congressional sessions for quite a number of months.

Remember Mark Twain's quote that goes something like:

    Does He Have Cancer?

This is the first time I've heard about him having cancer. Is he so ill that he can't get out of bed to get to called sessions of Congress? Sounds like you know a little more about Johnson, and could spread a little light on his strange question at that Armed Services committee.

Anythin you can add to shed light on his behavior would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks...

Johnson doesn't have cancer. Crabby was talking about someone else.

Johnson is just an idiot. People have said he's on experimental drugs for his Hepatitis C. Johnson himself has said that he is free of Hepatitis C.

Should his vote be taken away on the health care bill? No. Should he be evaluated to see if he is mentally competent to remain in his job? Yep.

I don't mean the fellow you are talking about. It was a Virginia senator back in the 1930's. I mean, why vote for a person on their deathbed.

My point is that we have had all kinds of people in Congress and some of their have been real nut cases .... and yet the country has survived. Of course it is not limited to Congressmen as was shown recently with the now ex-governor of Illinois.

In a not serious vein, it would be funny if the island did tip over. Can you see him saying, "I TOLD YOU SO!"

    The Thought Is Quite Possible

With all the "quaking" going on all around the world, it could tip-over, and you'd be correct in his claim: "I told you so!"

KJV Baptists . . . most Baptists on this list have no concept of "metaphor." An addition of navy personnel will sink Guam just before the trees of the field clap their hand.

    from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/metaphor

    Main Entry: met·a·phor
    Pronunciation: \ˈme-tə-ˌfȯr also -fər\
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English methaphor, from Middle French or Latin; Middle French metaphore, from Latin metaphora, from Greek, from metapherein to transfer, from meta- + pherein to bear — more at bear
    Date: 15th century
1 : a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money); broadly : figurative language — compare simile
2 : an object, activity, or idea treated as a metaphor : symbol 2
    — met·a·phor·ic \ˌme-tə-ˈfȯr-ik, -ˈfär-\ or met·a·phor·i·cal \-i-kəl\ adjective
    — met·a·phor·i·cal·ly \-i-k(ə-)lē\ adverb

Yep, all us stupid literalists have no idea what a metaphor is. It must be nice to be such an enlightened person such as yourself billwald. Well, I tell you what, if Hank Johnson is as enlightened as you, and was using metaphors, I'll just stick to being a dumb ol' literalist because Hank Johnson sounds like a complete IDIOT. Did you watch the video? Beyond the obvious idiotic remark about Guam sinking, the guy doesn't sound like he could find his own belly button, let alone help lead this nation. There's sounding stupid and then there's this guy. He's the model for sounding stupid.

actually, billwald, most of us are simply used to metaphors that make sense.

Here's one: billwald is to logical, on-topic posts as Scotch tape is to Rastafarian chalkboards.

Actually, rbell, that's an example of a simile :). Right on target, but a simile none the less :).

Thy post is strength to my bones.

Note the KJV-ish metaphorical language...all to increase the satirical quotient. :D
