If I'm correct in my understanding of the Scriptures, a nuclear free world will never happen as long as evil (sin) rules this world.

The presence of evil is all around us, and that is why, even the best intentions on Obama's behalf to end the presence of nuclear weapons all around the world, will never succeed.

While there are other Scriptures that support my premise, I believe that the best Scripture ever written on the evil in this world is found in Paul's letter to the Church in Ephesus. The following is taken from the Amplified Bible:

Ephesians 6:10-20 - "In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides]. Put on God's whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

Therefore put on God's complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]. Stand therefore [hold your ground], having tightened the belt of truth around your loins and having put on the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God, And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the [a]firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produced by the good news] of the Gospel of peace.(A) Lift up over all the [covering] shield of [c]saving faith, upon which you can quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked [one]. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword that the Spirit [d]wields, which is the Word of God.

Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God's consecrated people).

And [pray] also for me, that [freedom of] utterance may be given me, that I may open my mouth to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news (the Gospel), For which I am an ambassador in a coupling chain [in prison. Pray] that I may declare it boldly and courageously, as I ought to do."

If I understand this Scripture correctly, we (the world) are not fighting against each other (flesh and blood), BUT, "against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural)".

George W. wasn't far off when he called certain nations "the axis of evil." According to Paul, the world is dominated by a supernatural power that influences the rulers, kings, leaders, and others. Their power is present in the darkness and wickedness of the heavenly influence of the devil, himself.

IMHO, it is for this very reason that the idea, while noble and good, to rid the world of nukes will never work, because there is a presence of "evil" that will always need to be held in check by the nations who rule to protect and preserve peace. Nuclear deterrents will ALWAYS be an item of necessity in order to maintain civil order where evil prevails and hungers to rule by way of war, chaos, and terror, over those who do not agree with their way of thinking.

This manner of thinking, by the warmongers, terrorists, and creators of chaos are the direct result of this cloud of supernatural spirits who reign in evil to unleash their terror on unsuspecting civilizations around the world.

I believe that the only way to maintain an uneasy order of peace is to retain the ability and threat to unleash upon those who practice and live for evil is the thought of nuclear annihilation.

Right, or, wrong... nuclear weapons do maintain peace through fear, the only thing that evil seems to understand. And as long as evil continues to have a presence in our world, nuclear arsenals keep evil at arms length.

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

I agree with the goals of nuclear non-proliferation, but I see no way in the foreseeable future to have a non-nuclear world. Nuclear deterrents have actually greatly increased peace due to the threat of mutual destruction. Just look at the European wars from the 1800s-1945. Look at the wars since.

My main fear is that a rogue state will develop weapons or a terrorist will come upon them.

God rules this world and sets the limits for the operation of sin. Trust God!

    Agreed.

And I think your "main fear" is a valid one...because a rogue state with suicidal intentions might be the Achille's Heel of the whole thing: Not sure if "mutually assured destruction" has the intended effect on a suicidal/maniacal leader.

MAD only works when both parties have the impulse of self-preservation.

Well, like it or not, the technology for atomic bombs exists, and with each new day more and more countries are coming closer to obtaining nuclear capabilities. We will never be able to get rid of the atomic bomb.

And I believe the atomic bomb is shown in scripture in Zechariah.

Zech 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

This sounds amazingly similar to the effects of the tremendous heat an atomic bomb produces. People's flesh, eyes, and even their tongue vaporizing while they stand on their feet.

Of course, the Lord does not need an atomic bomb and could easily produce this type of heat without help. But perhaps the Lord will produce this heat by splitting atoms.

Nukes may have kept the major powers from going after each other, but they have done nothing to prevent the little wars that we see in so many places around the world.

And we see the difference in magnitude. War is a tragedy in any form, but WW1 and WW2 were simply on another level.

IMHO, this is just one isolated example that we should take His word as literal - can you imagine the questions the original KJV readers had from reading this passage?
Not sure of the evolutionary status of gunpowder in the 15-1600's, but that was probably the "nuclear" power of that day and it didn't come close to fitting the description of this passage.

Only in the last 50-60 years has this had any logical means of being literal, so how much more is there that we still don't understand????
