Tipping

I tip a server at a restaurant; approximately 15% for adequate service, up to 20% for very good service. Otherwise, I have not been in position to where tipping is expected, or maybe I'm too dumb to have known it.

The closest, I suppose, is getting a haircut. Last week I went into the barber shop, after checking, only because there was one customer getting worked and no one waiting. It turned out (I caught through the conversation) that the customer was a recently retired marine, and getting what resembled an old butch-cut, which took almost 30 minutes-- usually that barber takes only 10-15 minutes for one cut. Anyway, that guy tipped him $4-- gave a 20 for the $16 flattop cut, as posted. So on my $14 regular cut, which took about 13 minutes, I didn't tip. I haven't tipped that barber since he went from $12 to $14 for my kind of cut. But he must have gotten in those 45 minutes what he normally did.

Otherwise, I have not ridden a taxi, had anyone carry a suitcase, et al, and have never had a caddy.

 

I usually tip 20-25% at a restaurant. I generally tip a similar amount for a haircut.

 

The word "tips" comes from a Lord who gave some money to a server and remarked that it was for TIME in Personal Service..Hence. tip/

I don't care what the service is, but what service is personally given, that determines the amount.

We observe Boxing Day here and provide a box for those servers, such as postal works and delivery people of that nature.

I tip servers. I tip my hairdresser.

I never give below 10 percent, and they really have to be not so good for me to leave just 10 percent. Usually I leave 15, and if they are good, more.

 

typically resturant servers are about the only ones tipped here, and generally most people tip $1. to $5. depending on how good the service and how many at the table, if theres several each couple will tip. I pay too much for the food in the first place, and they deceided to take a job paying $2.25 hour, this is the amount of money they agreed to be paid for serving customers. We shouldn't have to pay for the food and the person to set it down on ur table, expecially since in most resturants thats the only time we'll see the server.

 

I will tip around 15% in a restaurant, but it can and will be less if the service stinks. Some may see me as cheap or rude for that but no one is entitled to get money for simply being there. I have tipped much more than 15% for exceptional service and will gladly do so again.

while I understand that most servers are paid a low wage that does not entitle them to anything if they do not deserve it. Again, some may think me callous but I don't throw money around and do not have millions in my bank account. If I perform poorly or don't do my job I cannot expect to be rewarded and neither should a server who does a poor job.

I have left large tips for those that I knew were having a hard time. I remember one girl (maybe nineteen) who served us. She was upset and my wife was able to engage her in conversation and found out that her fiance had broken up with her. We wrapped $30 (more than our check) in a note that contained a prayer for her. She literally ran out into the parking lot to hug my wife and thank us as it was the first good thing to happen that day.

I will also tip the one who cuts my hair. Brenda does a great job and is a family friend and makes getting a haircut a great experience.

 

I try and tip most people that provide a personal service.

Just a few off top of my head that I have tipped over the years.

Someone who delivers something to my home, more so if there is an installation involved.

The crew (not the owner) of someone who does work at my home.

Waiters and waitresses generally 20% if they do a good job. More if they are exceptional, less if they are poor.

A real nice restaurant the matradee also gets one, and sometimes the server who is usually different from the waiter.

Someone who cuts you hair.

Someone who helps with your luggage.

Years ago I used to go to a lot of baseball games. I would tip the guy in the ticket booth, and would get great seats. The old time ticket workers would always keep a handful of the best seats for "tipping" customers.

 

I'm already paying people to serve me, I'm not paying twice.

Donna, you may think about "paying twice," but if you do not tip, then the server is barely being "paid once."

 

At restuarants, 15-20%, depending on the service received. Also, it tends to be a higher percentage for breakfast and lunch, just because the actual amount is lower and I'll round up to the next dollar.

I always tip the person who cuts my hair since this is the person who helps me look my best --- and I need as much help as I can get!

For taxis (I take a lot of them when I travel), I make sure I tip as well, as these are the people who got me to my destination safely. I will normally tip a little better for better service here too.

We no longer have garbage men where we live.

 

I've instituted a tipping system at our church. I have a large jar that says "TIPS" on my keyboard in the worship center (for if I nail a song w/our praise band)...and one on my desk (in case my counseling is particularly good)...one in each church bus...and one in our youth facility (it's larger, for post-lock-in tips).









(not really...but it would be fun to see the expressions if I did...)

 

A $3.50 haircut?? What decade do you live in? Our local barber shop is $13 for both young and old (and that's a good price).

Please, please do not let those in the church know that you spend over $50 for your hair and then another $15 for a pedicure. "That money could be going to faith promise, don't you know??" and "How much do we pay our pastors anyway?" are just two questions that come to mind. Can't you just hear them talk??:tonofbricks:

 

Not really. We only have a substitue. Martinez resigned and we have a replacement until the election day -- then it's between Crist and Rubio. We also have Nelson (who's a nice guy), but many of us simply wish he would have stayed up in space 20 years ago.
