    This looks interesting!

Have you used this book to teach others?

Would it work well in a "advanced practice" youth group setting?

Icon - tell us about the man who wrote it. That often gives clues about the value of the work.

Had not known the name, except for a reformed fellow whose pamphlets I've seen (I'm reformed Baptist so in contact with such often)

The word Baptist and catechism simply do not go together. It is far too creedal to be Baptist. I find it sad to see people who call themselves Baptist abandoning distinctive Baptist beliefs.

Not Baptist? LOL. What a sense of humor!!

I grew up in the LEADING ifb church in the Midwest - 4th Baptist in Minneapolis, location of Central Baptist Theological Seminary and heir to WB Riley.

    We used RILEY'S catechism.

    Now we use SPURGEON'S catechism.

That some ifb'er can't see the wisdom of such study is unfortunate. They are a tiny fraction of Baptists and use their own small circle of friends or knowlege to make blanket judgments on "Baptists".

Here's a link from our church website for th earliest English Baptist catechism, revised by Keach and modified by Spurgeon. Enjoy and learn.

Interesting that you church as a child used a catechism. That violates what I was taught as a child growing up in a Virginia Baptist Church. Your church would have been considered much too liberal and following man's words. It also violates what I have seen in European Baptist churches. To me the emphasis now put on the Baptist Faith and Message by the SBC is making it far too creedal. But then the word Baptist covers lots of territory. Personally I do feel that having a catechism is a violation of traditional Baptist beliefs. Strange isn't it, that puts me in the conservative side of the issue and you on the liberal side. [Not intended as a slam, just an interesting point.]

Benjamin Keach endured the pillory in 1664 for daring to print his catechism A Child's Instructor. All copies were destoyed; all we have of it are the few snippets quoted by his inquisitors:

    From the trial record:

Early Baptists had their own catechisms and confessions. What they rejected was the coercive use of them, be it Reformed, Anglican, or Roman Catholic.

Many conservative Baptists catachize their children. Always have, always will. Sorry if that violates the frame of reference you have. Check into history, you'll be amazed at the leaders of Baptist movements (like Spurgeon in Europe and Riley in America) who have.

If I were to ask you, What is the chief end of man?

I would hope that without having to think about it, you would know exactly the correct wording to summarize the Bible's teaching.

(for those not knowing the answer, try "Man’s chief end is to glorify God,and to enjoy Him forever.")

I have in my possession an old, faded booklet titled A Baptist Catechism. It's more than a hundred years old. It is designed as a teaching aid, especially for children. It's rote learning.

I suppose it is harmful if one disagrees with some of the content.

    Dr.Bob and all Bb Brethren,
I am really excited about this cathechism.
Pastor W.R.Downing has been in the ministry faithfully for over 45yrs. he has taught biblical greek, and I believe Hebrew also.
He explains early on in this work that catechetical instruction is actually commanded in scripture. Questions, answers, oral instruction.
he pulls from 7 historic baptist confessions,Keach, Spurgeon all wrote or used them.
He deals with 172 questions rangeing from God and His attributes, the Holy Scriptures,Salvation, The cross, justification, sanctification, prayer, the grace of God, mortification of sin, scriptural self examination, baptism, Lord's supper, etc.
Dr.Downing gets at most of the verses you want addressed on key issues.
The thing I enjoy most is the totally Christ centered word centered approach that he employed in laying out this writing.
There is more than enough for a seminary trained person, and yet it is written with so many helps included a new believer could work through this with great profit.
Pastor Downing has an excellent grasp on church history, most all of the doctrinal controversies, both past[gnostics, and present excesses] and addresses them in a way that prepares the reader to identify the marks of these false teachers.
I have had the pleasure of hearing Pastor Downing in person,as well as hundereds of messages both on radio, and on cassettes. [dating Myself:laugh:]
This would be an excellant source of material for young persons, young adult groups, and quite frankly for all baptists.
Many of our good study books in our libraries were written by padeo brethren.
it is nice to see a strong Baptist presentation of the Sovereign Grace of God.
I have already ordered 6 more, and need to re -order as literally everyone I show this too wants copies of it.
It is probably the best book you will buy this year.
    The Church web-site is www.SGBCSV.org,
at the top, click on the literature portion, there are 8-10 free outlines that are excellent also, then scroll down to the bottom to find the Baptist Catechism ...with commentary.. it is priced by lulu publications at 14.99 plus tax, shipping, but when I ordered 6 more there was a 4% discount.
The more copies ordered the higher the discount.

I am not sure I understand what you mean here? What beliefs do we have to abandon?
No catechism, No creed.......is a creed. Historically many baptists have used them to great profit.
Could you explain a bit more what you think happens if you use this creed, or confession of faith?

The inspired writers learned many things by observation or inquiry, but they were preserved by the Holy Spirit from error whether in learning or in writing these things. …Those who concede errors in the Scriptures as to matter of fact, in order to remove conflict with some scientific opinions of our time, may tell us that they have great satisfaction in being at peace with science. But there are two drawbacks upon such a peace. It is the peace of sheer submission. …And it is only a partial and temporary peace. Other scientific men at once make still further demands, tending ever toward the complete abandonment of the supernatural. …If we assume that the inspiration of the Bible is only partial where are we to stop? Every man must then select adlibitum what portions of the Bible's teachings he will accept as true.

…These modern devotees of higher criticism must wait each week for the mail from Germany to know what to believe or preach, to find how much, if any, of their Bible remains….

Lee, keep the Seminary lashed to the Cross. If heresy ever comes in the teaching, take it to the faculty. If they will not hear you and take prompt action, take it to the trustees of the Seminary. If they will not hear you, take it to the Convention that appoints the Board of Trustees, and if they will not hear you, take it to the great common people of our churches. You will not fail to get a hearing then.
--"Deathbed Commission to his Successor," L.R. Scarborough

The modern cry, "Less creed and more liberty," is a degeneration from the vertebrate to the jelly fish, and means less unity and less morality, and it means more heresy. …It is a positive and very hurtful sin to magnify liberty at the expense of doctrine.

Catechism is Just TOO Catholic, etc...

Interesting post, but, the thought of a Baptist church having catechism takes me to the days of my youth. My brought me up in the Lutheran church, and we visited the Catholic church every major holiday to attend Mass and light a candle, or, two!

Just the thought of catechism and age old pre-prescribed Liturgy is not the way I want to learn about my Savior, and live and serve him. I need freedom in my approach to the Father, and catechism is not the raod for me....
