I do know Coke has never tasted the same to me since. Even when they came out with the 'clasic coke'....... I believe they changed something in the basic ingredients... like the origin of sugar.... from cane to beet or corn? Who knows?

Do you actually remember the taste? It was around for such a short time.

I prefer Pepsi. I don't like Regular Coke and Diet Coke. But Cherry Coke is okay.

Or, as it was commonly called then, Pepsi

Has their been a worse marketing idea from a marketing giant in the history of the planet?

I have always said Coke tastes different now because of cans. I think the formula used when going to plastic bottles made all the difference in the world. Chemists have explained the reasons why, but then I explain theology or homiletics to them and we all end up confused.

I hated it too! I can remember that it tasted like an opened Coke that had sat out on the kitchen table for a couple of days. Flat. Weak on the sugar.

    You are exactly right!!

I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but you can still buy Coca Cola in the original glass bottles. On rare occassions that I do drink Coca Cola (or, as we used to say down South, Co'Cola), I prefer the glass bottles because of the whole BPA issue with the plastic bottles, as well as environmental reasons (not to mention out of a sense of nostalgia)

The first time I had it was at a drive-thru. I thought something was wrong with it, and went back to return it. The lady told me it was the new coke. I hated it, and like Scarlett said, it was flat, and weak. Bleck.

Book "Blink," very interesting! has a chapter on "New Coke" and "Pepsi Challenge." Seems that tasting one shot of each, Pepsi consistently comes out ahead but when it comes to drinking a 6-pack, Coke is preferred. Long term taste depends upon quantity as well as initial taste.

Did you know that at Passover, you can get Coke with no high fructose corn syrup? It has just sugar! I didn't get to taste test it this year but I want to next year. The difference is that the kosher Coke has a yellow cap instead of red.

Wow - 25 years ago hubby and I got married! I didn't realize it was the same year!

Now that's interesting, Ann! I would like to try that next year. DH and I recently toured the World of Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta. Fun! I don't recall hearing or seeing anything about that one. I've always liked Coke but hardly ever have a soft drink anymore. (Although I would like to try the new stevia drinks that have come out) Had fun in the tasting room at World of Coke though tasting Coke products from around the world.

My sister is sure that New Coke was a gimmick so Coke could renew their patent - which she says was about to expire. She claims that New Coke was never meant to last and that Coke used the marketing excuse to keep the public from finding out what was really going on.

I actually liked the New Coke, so I guess I am one of the few.

Every time I took the Pepsi challenge, I chose Coke.

Pepsi recently came out with a retro formula made with real sugar as opposed to a corn syrup sweetener. I really couldn't tell a difference. As to the New Coke, it was nothing but a marketing ploy. As soon as the hype wore off they went back to the original formula. Me, Mountain Dew, was my choice of drink in those days so I didn't really care although I thought the New Coke was flatter tasting. I was also a PFC in the army counting down the days to getting back home and starting college.

Never tried it. My parents didn't usually give soda to their 18-month-old.
