Name your Top Ten favorite hymns.

    A few parameters:

    1) Hymns only
    2) Do not have to be old, as long as they fit the other specifications
    3) Must be strophic (verse or verse/refrain style), so no choruses
    4) If you can't think of ten, any other number will do

Here are mine, at least for today:

    10) Lead, Kindly Light

    9) Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
Praise Him for His grace and favor / To our fathers in distress / Praise Him, still the same as ever / Slow to chide and quick to bless

    8) There Is a Fountain Filled With Blood

    7) Lead Me to Calvary
May I be willing, Lord to bear / Daily my cross for Thee / Even Thy cup of grief to share / Thou hast borne all for me

    6) O For a Closer Walk With God
My favorite part of the text is included in my signature

    5) The God of Abraham Praise

    4) Close to Thee

    3) Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Finish, then, Thy new creation / Pure and spotless let us be / Let us see Thy great salvation / Perfectly restored in Thee / Changed from glory into glory / Till in heaven we take our place / Till we cast our crowns before Thee / Lost in wonder, love and praise.

    2) Out of My Bondage, Sorrow, and Night
Out of the fear and dread of the tomb / Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come / Into the joy and light of Thy home / Jesus, I come to Thee

    1) O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus
O, the deep, deep love of Jesus / Love of every love the best / 'Tis an ocean vast of blessing / 'Tis a haven sweet of rest / O, the deep, deep love of Jesus / 'Tis a heaven of heavens to me / And it lifts me up to glory / For it lifts me up to Thee.

    Blessings.

Can't name you 10 (right now I'm not sure I could name all my kids - I'm absolutely exhausted mentally and physically...and emotionally) but my absolute top favorite is Before the Throne of God Above.

Yes, that's a great text. I really like that older hymns have found contemporary use, and I think the new(er) tune is better.

I especially like the second stanza:

When Satan tempts me to despair,
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there,
Who made an end to all my sin.
    Because the sinless Savior died,
    My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the just, is satisfied,
To look on Him and pardon me.

It makes me cry each and every time. I mean EVERY time. I just read that and I teared up. :) What an amazing truth is in that hymn.

My #1 favorite is "How Great Thou Art." I have sung that as a solo probably hundreds of times over the last 47 years of being saved. Well, it will be 47 years May 18. There is also (2) "My Jesus, I Love Thee", (3) "Amazing Grace", (4) "At Calvary", (5) "At the Cross", (6) "Because He Lives", (7) "Blessed Assurance", (8) "The Family of God", (9) "Fill My Cup, Lord", (10) "He Touched Me".

These are just a few of my favorites; there are many more. My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night." I have sung that nearly every year for the last 4 decades.

One song I've done many times and have never been able to sing it all the way through without breaking down is "I Should have Been Crucified." Thinking of how Jesus took my place and paid the price that I owed as I sing that song is too emotional for me.

"I should have been crucified. I should have suffered and died. I should have hung on that cross in disgrace, but Jesus, God's Son, took my place!"

Whenever I've sung the song, "Plenty of Time", I like to tell how the song was written. Two teenaged boys were friends. One was saved and the other wasn't. The saved boy pleased with his friend to get saved before it was too late, but his friend just said, "I'm young, I've got plenty of time." Yet, shortly after that the unsaved boy went out into eternity unprepared. His friend wrote the song "Plenty of Time." I can't remember the words.

Great list. Amazing Grace is OUR song; a theme for all who have been reached by grace. Blessed Assurance is one of the all-time great gospel hymns - I love Crosby texts.

I especially like the 3rd stanza of My Jesus, I Love Thee

I'll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
    And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
    And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow;
"If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.

Great, thank you. The thoughts behind the text of Trust and Obey has explicitly been in effect since Old Testament times, though it would have been like this: Trust and obey / For there's no other way / To be happy in Yahweh / Than to trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love,
Until all on the alter we lay

    Blessings

I'll never forget singing this one when I was a kid. We would almost shout on at the beginning of the refrain. "NO! Never alone...."

We do that -- older hymns with more contemporary music. Sometimes it makes you hear the words even more. Also, our kids are hearing and learning (and singing) some great hymns of the faith.

What I don't like about many of the old hymns is someone changing the beautiful music that the music masters of yesteryear used. Some old songs need to have the music changed--but VERY few. Hardly anyone recording "Amazing Grace" uses the correct music, and I think the original music is beautiful and doesn't need changing. The same holds true for other great old hymns that modern singers and song writers don't seem to like in their original music and want to change it and ruin it in my opinion.

You don't know what you're missing if you haven't heard a four-part choir sing "Amazing Grace" without music. Normally I don't like singing without music, but that sounds so beautiful.

I think you're right about this. Usually, I don't think the tune needs to be changed at all, but there are some old texts that are fantastic that aren't used because the original tune isn't really good. "Before the Throne" was one of them. It used to be sung to the tune of "Sweet Hour of Prayer," which isn't bad in itself, but doesn't really fit the text very well.

So someone wrote another very nice tune that fits it very well. So in a few cases, I like it.

Good list. Again, I think "Love Divine" is one of the best hymn texts of all time. I also like "Come, Thou Fount."

O, to grace how great a debtor,
    Daily I'm constrained to be.
Let thy grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wonder, Lord I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love,
Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
