Today marks my third year on the Baptist Board and it’s been even more of a learning experience than I expected it would be. Here are some of the things I have learned, completely random and in no particular order:

    1. The level of knowledge and quality of posts here is very high, a good deal higher than any other board where I have visited or posted.

    2. Southern Baptists are not as dominant as I had thought they were. In fact, some of the best posts on here come from Reformed Baptists and Independent Fundamental Baptists (IFB)(a term I also have learned here.

    3. Calvinism is a very big deal. In fact it may be the most polarizing serious issue discussed here.

    4. Sola fide is a hill that most Baptists are willing to die on. I shouldn’t have been surprised at this but my church is not a place where doctrinal teaching thrives.

    5. There is a lot more tolerance of alcoholic beverages on this board than there is in the Baptist churches in my community.

    6. I have received from some members here a sense of what is like to live in a community where Baptists are a small and insignificant part of the larger community.

    7. If you’re going to post something controversial here, you’d better be prepared to defend it because there are any number of people with the ability to shoot your idea full of holes.

    8. Although Baptists believe in soul liberty, they get mighty intolerant if you stray too far off the ranch.

    9. The debate threads would be better with more debate and less invective.

    10. KJVO is alive and well in many places. Actually I already knew that but I had not heard much about it since the 1960’s.

    11. Fundamentalists ought to lighten up a little. They would be a lot more effective if they were slower to denounce every idea they disagree with.

    12. There are a lot of people here I would really like to meet and be friends with.

I can heartily second all of that.

I have also learned quite a bit theologically from several during my time here. I have learned how to better debate my own points through observation and participation. And I have better solidified my own faith and beliefs through these interactions.

While I agree with all of your statements, I like the last one the best.

I've been here since 2002 and there are lots of people that I respect very much and would like to sit down and have lunch with someday.

And there are a lot of people that I miss very much.

Good points, Zenas. Points that I think the majority on here can agree with.

Fantastic points, friend, especially the one about the fundamentalists. I would add that they need to remember the doctrines which make one a fundamentalist.

    Blessings.

Oh, the fundamentalists...always pointing out that sin is sin.

I love Matthew Henry's commentary on Matthew 5:19.

    Thanks Matt. Case in point.

In any event, that's not the part I have an issue with. The insensitivity and condescension toward other image-bearers is the issue. That and the legalism about non-essentials.

Couldn't agree more!!! I can't say that this is true of all fundamentalists, but I have noticed from the ones I have known during my lifetime a tendancy to look down on those they don't agree with. For example, I used to attend a VERY fundamental Baptist church, in which I sat on numerous occasions and heard both the pastor and visiting preachers, as well as several members make fun of pentacostals and other charismatics for "speaking in tongues". Just because you don't agree with someone does not make it acceptable to ridicule them. That is not the attitude of love which our Lord instructed us to show.

I have a feeling your idea of ridiculing them is that the "fundamentalists" simply pointed out how ridiculous they are. If you act ridiculous, expect to be ridiculed.

I am not without sin, 'tis true. Thank you for pointing that out to me as I need to repent from these things and ask God to help me to abstain from even those kinds of thoughts.

I am also not a pastor. A pastor is to lead the flock, both in word and deed. Ridiculing instead of praying for them would be the right thing to do. I do pray for those who are so wrapped up in the man-made and have never met Jesus Himself.

The problem with ridiculing other evangelicals, besides the fact that it's the complete opposite of the love Jesus ascribed to them with His death, is that it is equally ridiculous behavior.

I contend however that fundamentalists aren't actually ridiculing anyone. I think that your definition of ridiculing is just over sensitive. By simply pointing out that someone's behaviour is ridiculous, you would say I am riduculing someone. I would say they are ridiculing themselves and I am simply pointing it out. Again, act ridiculous and people will think you are ridiculous. If they don't want people to think they are ridiculous, they need to stop doing the Holy Ghost Hokey Pokey and act lke normal people.

Just been kind of following along, but since you seem to have to corner on how "normal people" are supposed to behave, please enlighten us on what "normal" behavior is. I sure don't want to miss it!

Well, let's see...for starters, barking like a dog and claiming it is the Holy Spirit, is not normal...

I have learned on BB that many Christians take some isolated cases (which have gone overboard) of a fringe element in a movement and then characterize an entire movement as being like those fringe elements.

The above is a good example. What they don't point out (or bother trying to find out) is that most penetecostals also do not condone these actions.

This broadbrushing of other beliefs based on very limited information, also occurs in other areas, such as Calvinism and eternal security,
