Your thoughts on Sunday School classes! I've seen mostly 1 to 2 adult classes in a church; and up to 5 different adult classes.

By that, I mean, whatever you feel led to do. I don't think there's any reason why it has to be so specifically subscribed.

Agreed - what might work for one local church, might be a poor decision for another church

And by subscribed, I mean "prescribed." Man, I'm tired.

Men and women together, with teachers being chosen by the members of the class.

The only one I didn't check was "teacher being chosen by members of the class". It's not a popularity thing but a qualified thing.

In our church, we don't have Sunday School for the adults but we have classes on Wednesday nights. We have had classes just for men or just for women, just for marrieds, just for those who are grieving, just for those who are divorced, just for those who are involved in the church plant, etc. But I do think the teachers should be chosen by the pastoral staff since they know if one is qualified or not.

I have been in mixed male and female classes as well as men only. I have had male and female teachers and don't believe women should be teaching men. Many teachers, in my opinion, are not qualified to teach and persons wanting to do that should be screened by a person or persons qualified to choose teachers--maybe the pastor and the deacons. I suppose that since elections are done for certain positions in the church, the church members electing teachers should be included. The churches I've been in even elected the treasurer--so why not the ones who will be teaching God's word?

From I Timothy 3: 4-5 can we say that the Pastor has the responsibility for the Church? With responsibility comes authority; and with authority comes accountability. While growing up in the 50s and 60s we had Training Union classes before the sunday evening service. (Hosea 4:6...My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge)

We have seniors (men and women) in one class, and a retired Pastor is the teacher....We have "mature" adults in another class, a Deacon is the teacher, and then we have young adults class taught by the very young Assistant Pastor, then teens taught by the Pastor, then the other classes taught by qualified members of the church who volunteer and are decided on by Pastor.

Classes could never pick a teacher...what a mess that would be!

I have been in churches where the adults were separated by gender, while other churches separated by age. We were given the choice of which class we preferred. If the pastor was teaching a class, then I usually preferred his class. Being 64 I would be with the seniors. However, rarely have I been in a Baptist church that was big enough to separate the adults since most people only go to the worship service, and even fewer return in the evening or on Wednesday night.

There's a song that says something about a prayer meeting and "everybody was there." Well, I can say that it definitely was not a Baptist church since you can't get every member there for any service--and certainly not prayer meeting.

We offer pretty much all combinations.

IMHO--the larger the church, the more crucial SS is (or whatever the equivalent of SS is at your church). We are large enough now that folks not plugged in to SS tend to drift away and they might not be noticed for a while.

Who chooses the teacher might vary from church to church--the important thing is that the teachers are chosen based on Scriptural qualifications.

Men and women togetherl; teacher chosen by the pastor.

Our classes are pretty hard core so it's pretty hard for people to join the class in the middle.

I'll be honest. I've hated sunday school for basically my entire life, because it's usually been people my own age and someone a bit older reading out of a quarterly published by Lifeway (vomit).

    With rare exception, of course.

Personally, I think the whole institution needs to be overhauled somehow. I'd love to see people of all ages from youth to senior adult (smaller children probably should be in their own groups). I think that's a powerful aspect of community that almost nobody capitalizes on.

And it's sad that many people think young and old can't worship together.

We have both men only, women only and mixed classes, but the leadership team chooses the teacher.
