Many years ago shortly after conversion my wife and I attended a local church to listen to a speaker who was speaking there. We were familar with the speaker because he had been to our church (a large SBC Church) and billed as a Southern Baptist. We both were young and ignorant and when a "plea" was given to anyone who wanted to have a closer walk to come forward which both my wife and I did. To get to the point as the finale to the service everyone who had come forward to seek a closer walk was ask to come to the platform and form a semi circle. Then a group of believers from the church lined up behind the "seekers" and all began to pray aloud all at one time. We were asked to pray and to utter what ever came in our mind after unsuccesful in speaking in tongues I was asked to repeat the worh hallaluah repeadily as fast as possible. Well by this time I was feeling about like Wendy Bagwell did in his snake experience. I just wanted to get out of there. My wife and I left feeling we had excaped. I was told this was what was known as psysic tongues. I was wondering if anyone else has had any dealings with this.

PS: The SBC preacher defected to the AOG and became a much sought after speaker.

Interesting how he tried to get you to hyperventalate by repeating hallelujuah quickly several times. It creates a euphoric feeling leaving you suseptable and lack inhibitions. Its a cheap high. this is often regarded as "Holy Ghost" experience.

I'm not familiar with "psyic" tongues.

I'm wondering if you mean "psychic" tongues. Of course, I've never heard of that either.

Somehow, I can't see those folks in the upper room at Pentecost all sitting there hyperventilating in order to call down the tongues of fire.

My mother in law has a psychic tongue, because she is talking before she ever knows we are coming over before we open the front door.

When I was first saved at 16 my aunt invited me to attend the church where she went. At the service she stood up and announced to the church that I had been saved and to pray for me because I had not yet spoken in tongues. This bothered me a great deal and led me to really study the issue and see what the Bible had to say about it. What was terribly troubling to me at the time turned out to be a blessing because it led me to seek the Lord even more and to read my Bible.

Religions that use "tongues" are missing what the Bible says about its use. If anyone speaks in tongues in church, there MUST be an interpreter. Otherwise, they are to remain silent and speak only to God.

The New Testament doesn't say that tongues cannot be used) although I believe that tongues are what they were at Pentecost--known languages. The disciples did NOT speak in an unknown tongue; they spoke in different languages that the people from different lands could understand. It was done so that everyone there could hear the wonderful words of God and understand them. Had the disciples spoken in an unknown tongue that no one understood, it would have done nothing for the people there. Even then, some scoffed and said that the disciples were drunk.

There is always a new experience, a new book, a new idea for those who ignore Jesus and what He commands.

I have failed to find in any church growth book what Jesus preached in the sermon on the mount--humility.
