Where Jannes and Jambres came from

    In 2Timothy 3:8, we read........
    “Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. “

    For all my Christian life, I have heard and read the speculation of “man’s wisdom” about where Paul got these two names.
    Because, as they say,......“They aren’t found anywhere else in Scripture?”

    And for the life of me, I can’t figure out what the big deal is...........
    “Paul was writing by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and God spoke these two names to him.”

    Is that so hard to believe.

    Sure they were mentioned several times in the Targum, but so what.
    We know, that Paul didn’t use “Jewish tradition” as filler, in any of his inspired epistles.

    Every Word of the Bible came out of God’s mind, not man’s...........
    2 Peter 1:19-21
    V.19 ¶ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
    V.20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
    V.21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

    The Bible routinely uses extra-biblical material. That doesn't contradict inspiration. It is a part of inspiration.

    As I said, this is what I have always heard;
    But, once it’s inspired, than it is no longer “extra-biblical”. Right?

    We accept it as truth because it's in the Bible. But, we don't not accept the source because it's validity cannot be verified. What's the big deal? Isn't there a verse about straining at gnats?

    Well, yes, I suppose in one sense it's not extra-biblical, but it actually is. The point is that it was not original to the biblical author. It is still inspired, however.

    Jannes & Jambres were the names of the chief magicians in Pharaoh's court, who imitated to some degree some of the miracles God gave Moses to perform, such as bringing Moses' staff to life as a snake. While their names aren't mentioned in the OT, several Roman historians such as Pliny mentioned them. (Pliny also called Moses a magician as well.)

    Paul probably got it from one of the other apostles who got it from Jesus.

    Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.
    2 Timothy 3:8 (ESV)

    Paul’s purpose was to compare the false teachers that plagued the Ephesian church to those men who opposed God’s work in Egypt.
    It is immaterial where and what names Paul used here.
    These were the names used among the people at the time in the various stories that they shared.
    They were known as Moses’ enemies and opposed to God’s purposes.

    The names Paul used of the men who opposed Moses at the time is immaterial; we know from the biblical accounts that Moses stood up to severe hostility in his presentation of God’s message.

    Imagine I said, “Just as Lex Luthor opposed Superman, so these men also oppose truth, justice and the American way."
    Have I confirmed the historicity of Lex Luthor?
    Or have I used a story to illustrate a point?
