Since there are so many sub-denominations in the Baptist denomination; would it be reasonable for the BB to ask members to list theirs in the Bio section?
IE: Southern Baptist, Regular Baptist, Primitive Baptist, etc. I believe this will help us to understand each other better, and our beliefs.

The following web site lists quite a few of them: en.wikipedia.or/wiki/List_of_Baptist_denominations

While many Baptist groups have similar doctrines and practices, some have significant differences.

I heard about this foot-washing church that split. Half the members joined with other churches which hold that the same person who washes ought to dry; the other half went with churches who hold that a different person should dry.

And then there's the story of a man who was traveling through town and saw two identical Baptist churches right across the street from each other. Same architecture, everything.

Curious, he stopped at a coffee shop to find out about it. The owner told him, "the church on the left side of the street believes Pharoah's daughter found Moses in the bulrushes. The church on the right side of the street holds that "that's what she SAYS."

I am a traditional, freedom loving, mainstream , dancin' and drinkin' ( on occasion) old-school baptist from the southland, who believes in soul-competency , priesthood of the believer, separation of Church and state, only believer's should be baptized by immersion, the bible should be interpreted by the life lived by Christ, red-letter loving, go to Church on Sundays (no wed. nights) , preacher's kid B-A-P-T-I-S-T.....................THERE AIN'T MANY OF US LEFT.

    Does that help ?

And, if you judge by traditional Baptist beliefs they are not even Baptist these days. The SBC are much too hierarchical to be Baptist, much too creedal.

Mississippi John and I appear to be pretty much alike in our Baptist beliefs. Watch out John there are some here who are going to call you liberal because you take Christ's teachings seriously.

If I were to walk around with a sign, I don't want it to be a sub denomination.

I voted "NO!" Baptists (at least some) choose to cooperate but most are their own little 1 church denomination.

You speak as a foolish person, brother. Unless requiring that a church agree to the Baptist Faith & Message is what you call "too hierarchical, too creedal", and then I would say you are just being nuts. The BF&M is a statement of beliefs, but it does not nail a church into a specific set... it is worded so that each church is free to handle doctrine in their own way within it. No church is required to give to the Cooperative, and Nashville isn't going to send "higher ups" to check up on things.

Until you know what you are talking about it would pay for you to keep it to yourself.

Thanks for the backhand slap. So now the rest of us ignore Christ's teachings, or do we just treat them flippantly?

Since 1962 (nearly a year before I was saved) I've been a northern, independent, fundamental Baptist. There is no such church in Florida, and I've considered moving back to Michigan because of it. However, thinking of the extreme cold and other miserable weather up there always makes me change my mind.

Tell that to professors and missionaries who, because they do not believe in creeds or creedalism have either been fired or not hired because they will not sign the BF&M. To use it as a litmus test is to make it a creed. Simply because a person refuses to sign such a declaration does not mean they disagree with it, but that they refuse to be bound by a creed ... such as the BF&M has become.

I voted no. We have differences and that is obvious during debates. At least we can be unified in that we are all Baptist.

You are talking about two different things. The professors ect, are employees of a school, ect.

Local churches are totally different - SBC churches definitely are independent.

Back to OP - yes, Baptists should list their "sub - denomation"

In general terms Baptist is not a denomination however, the fourth definition says "united in belief"

So in a sense Southern Baptists, as well all baptists could be considered a denomination.

It depends on the church. In the south, you will often find that this is the case, but it is not always.

FBC Hammond is a classic example of a non-SBC first baptist.
