In the passage below did Jesus tell (order, command) the Apostles to do something it was impossible for them to do or should they have been able to do it on their own through the Holy Spirit without handing the job back to Jesus?

Asking, I don't know. What say you all?

12Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."

13He replied, "You give them something to eat."

They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd." 14(About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each." 15The disciples did so, and everybody sat down. 16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people. 17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

It was a miracle of Christ. It was a miracle that no man could replicate, testifying to the deity of Christ. No one on earth could imitate such a miracle as this.

Jn. 6:6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

I think Jesus still replicates this miracle today. We feed a lot of people on Friday nights on little to nothing. Praise God.

But what should the proper response have been to Jesus' command to them? It is a strange story. Does God ask you to do impossible things? If so, how do you respond and how do they turn out? Always with miracles?

Jesus performed the miracle not his followers. Jesus knew what he would do from the beginning. He was testing their FAITH in Him, if they really believed in the face of impossible circumstances He was the "Son of God" or God in the flesh.

This is a valid test for true Christians with seemingly impossible circumstances in life. One disciple passed the test (Andrew) and one failed the test (Philip) - Jn. 6:7-8.

This text is not designed by Christ to teach us to do impossible things but rather to look to him to do the impossible when facing seemingly impossible circumstances in our ordinary daily lives.

When the little boy offered the five fish and two loafs of bread it melted the hard hearts of others in the crowd and they brought out what they had with them. And there were enough for all with food left over.

If this isn't true where did the 12 baskets come from that the left over food was put in? I doubt that people or the disciples were carrying empty baskets all day long.

The miracle was the melting of the hearts of selfish people. It would still be a miracle today.

    Saggy said,
Amen Saggy. Isn't it amazing how God works in situations like you posted?

I will soon post an entry of his amazing work in my life this year.

The same place he gets his information to belittle God on every other miracle in the Bible.....his imagination.

Believe I said it was a miracle. Melting the hard hearts of people is more of a miracle than creating lots of food out of five loafs and two fishes. Got can take so little and create so much, even in changing the hearts of people.

Still wondering where you got the idea that the other people provided the food and not God.

My friend, do you write your own scriptures????? Obvously what has been provided by the Holy Spirit is not sufficient for you or the answer Christ gives (Jn. 6:6) is not sufficient for you. Christ never mentions any other food being given and never blesses any other food but that whch was given by the little boy. Those who were given food by Christ didn't believe him even after that obvious miracle. So much for your idea that Christ melted their hearts.

I accept it as a miracle regardless of how it happened. However, are you not curious as to where the twelve empty baskets came from that were filled with the leftover food? I wonder what was done with the food?

No! The plain inferrence is that the twelve baskets came from Christ blessing the fish and bread given by the body. No greater miracle than Jesus changing water into wine.

As far as what was done with the food, the Bible is silent. However, the miracle did not convert the crowd as later they followed him and Jesus told them they were looking for food rather than for truth.

Men's hearts weren't melted that day. Want proof? Read John 6.

Are you saying you believe that Christ created the 12 baskets? That is an interesting idea, one I have not heard before.

People remain the same. Reflecting on the facts of the miracle, some hearts are still not melted or affected by it.

    Let's see....

Create the heavens and the earth...check!
    Create all the animals...check!
Create all the plants, trees, etc...check!
    Create man...check!

Create 12 baskets....leave it to Crabby to not have the faith God can do this one. Of course...Crabby likely doesn't have the faith that God created the aforementioned items either. Those were a result of "big bangs" and "evolution".

Scripture is silent as to the source of the baskets.

They could have been part of the miracle or they could have just been handy.

With 5,000 people in the crowd it is not inconceivable that a few people had a basket or two with them.

Why are you so focused on such a non-issue?

I'm still wondering where it is that you get that the people in the crowd had the food to start with.

Are you ever going to answer that simple question?

This is the third time that I have asked.
