A surprise candidate won the SC Senate Democratic primary. He was at one time a homeless vet and evidentally has been in trouble with the law. He was opposed by the establishment, and has been asked to withdraw by the powers that be.

To me the point is not whether he is suited to be elected, the fact is the people elected him, and the Democratic Party leaders care more about having a nominee in their mold than the will of the people. Don't kid yourself, the Republicans would have done the exact same thing.

    What do you think?

I think a party should be able to have its own rules about how it selects a candidate; without interference by the government

For example, some states or Commonwealths have open primaries - so if people in mass from the other party - can throw in a weak candidate.

I people really want to have a voice in the selection of candidates - then they should get involved in their local political party by being a member of the committee.

I really agree with that last statement. As you know, our state (commonwealth) has closed primaries. There is a bill before the state legislature to change to open primaries. I have no idea what its chances are. There are lots of people around here who do not like the idea of crossing over in primaries. Personally, I have no problem with it.

There would also be no problem if a party wants to nominate its candidate by committee vote or convention, if they so choose. In today's climate, I really do not know if that could be a political reality or not. In our state, if a candidate drops out after the primary, then the state level political party chooses a replacement.
