The congressman appears to have made the first physical contact which could be determined as an "assault".

It's clearly assault, plus there's the issue of taking his cell phone and restraining the boy even after he repeatedly asked the Congressman to let him go.

Some on the left are already trying to spin this as an "ambush" but the video is clear that the two boys did not approach him and did not impede his travel in any way. It also shows that the boy was respectful. Etheridge just grabbed him and assaulted him for no apparent reason, other than that the boy asked a question he didn't like.

I don't think charges will be filed, but I hope they are.

Haul the jerk up on assault charges and perhaps censure or removal from office would be appropriate.

I would suggest an immediate transport to the famous sheriff in Arizona. In fact, if I was king for a day, I would ship all 535 of them there for an extended period of time. I might call him up and ask if he had a few more spots for former members, such as Senator Toe Tapping Craig.

How dare that arrogant clown treat an American citizen that way?

Even a non-physical contact "ambush" (i.e. paparazzi) is not a justification for assault by the "victim".

This was not even that, it was simply two peaceful law-abiding young men exercising their rights as citizens.

And I have to say, the boy showed remarkable restraint.

By the way, did anybody else notice that the Congressclown didn't give the boy his phone back? Isn't that robbery?

The link wouldn't work for me, so I had to look it up on Youtube.

Whew!!! I saw something COMPLETELY different than you guys.

I saw two young men who wanted to be filmed in an altercation with this guy and whose intent was to publish it on the internet.

Was the Congressman in the wrong to knock the camera out of the "student's" hand and to grab his wrist in a threatening manner? Well, of course he was. :BangHead: He was completely acting out of line for a Congressman. Shame on him!!!!!

But I have two red flags that caught my cynical eye.

    (1) Why wouldn't the young man answer his question? Why couldn't he just say, "Sir, my name is Sam and I go to school in Iowa." He didn't have to give his last name or the name of his school. But it appeared to me that he was intentionally dragging the conversation on by NOT answering the question.

    (2) Why didn't his friend behind him PUT THE CAMERA DOWN AND HELP HIS FRIEND? He seemed very intent on capturing all of this on film. I would have put the camera down and put a karate chop on that Congressman's arm to make him let go of my comrade.

I'm a very cynical person who sees the glass half-empty and tends not to believe everything I see.

Maybe it's a character flaw, but just can't get up in arms and I didn't see what you-all saw.

OK. What did they do that indicated that they wanted a confrontation? Did the boy approach him in a threatening manner? Did the boy approach him at all? Did the boy at any time raise him voice or make any move that could have been seen as aggressive? Did they impede his travel at all?

Why should he have to give his name? Isn't he an American citizen? Are citizens now required to carry papers to identify themselves before they can talk to someone on the street?

And then you would have gone to jail, while the Congressclown got off.

Given the political views you've stated here many times, I'm not surprised that you wouldn't see a problem with a liberal Congressclown assaulting an American citizen who had the unmitigated gall to ask him a question.

I looked up the Youtube version and it's the same.

To answer both your "why" questions, very simply because neither of the young men were legally required to do so.

Plus the not-out-of-the-ordinary press core type interview justifies an illegal assault on the part of the congressman.

Just saw the line of the day referring to Congressclown Etheridge: "The last time I saw someone handled that rough while the interrogator demands, 'Tell me who you are!', it was an episode of 24."

Well, they got in his personal space for one thing. The camera was awfully close to his face. Even if the Congressman was the one who got up in the camera, they should have known this was going to be ugly and backed off.

Anyway, asking a Democrat "Do you support the Obama agenda" is full of implications and only ticks Democrats off. What on EARTH did they THINK he was going to say or do? Ignore them?

Hmmmm.....well, that wasn't going to make for an interesting project that they claimed they were working on.

I'm not saying that they couldn't or shouldn't have interviewed him. I think it's good that young people do this type of thing. But there is a whole better way to go about doing something like this.

Example. "Hello, Mr. Congressman. My name is Sam from Iowa State. I'm completing a project for my political science class - may I ask you some questions."......

......."How do you, as a Democrat, feel that our President is doing with the BP oil tragedy on the coast?"

Do you see the difference? I do.

I just think that they were looking for their 15 minutes.

Let's answer my question first. Why WOULDN'T he state his first name only and perhaps the beserk Congressman would have taken his hands off of him. The more he did not answer the question, the more crazy the Congressman got. And that appeared to me to be his purpose.

This didn't appear to be an issue of First Amendment Rights.

So you are saying that the other young man didn't help his friend because he didn't want to get in trouble? And that filming the Congressman was a better course of action? Perhaps.

All I know is that filming the idiot would be the LAST thing on my mind. Getting his hands off of my friend would have been the first. But that's just me.

And especially when the Congressman wrapped his arm around the boy giving the appearance that he was going to take him down and wrestle him - that's when I REALLY would have put the camera down.

But his friend didn't. He just stood there politely and kept saying, "Sir! Sir!"

Not sure what those political views are.

I am a die-hard Republican, conservative with my politics, money, and religion.

I definitely see a problem with the Congressman's behavior. I said in my first post that he was 100% out of line. And he will and SHOULD suffer consequences for this.

I just also see the "asking of the question" as a provocation. I think that might have known that this guy was a whack job and got in his personal space and brought up Obama's "agenda".

Actually, he didn't. In fact, he stood in one place the entire time. The Congressclown walked up to him.

There's no evidence of that from the video, but if the Congressclown thought that, then why didn't he just move or even just walk away altogether?

Really? He should have known he was going to be assaulted by a Senator on a public sidewalk?

Why? Are they than strongly against it? Or are they that ashamed that they support it?

Why couldn't the Congressclown have said, "Yes, I wholeheartedly support it" or "No, I don't support it" or "I support some of it, but not others. Is there are specific issue you're referring to"?

Perhaps he thought he was going to be reasonable and, you know, not assault him.

How do you know the project was suppose to be "exciting"? How do you know that it wasn't just to do research or to address an issue?

Ah yes, the old, "Well, you know, he wouldn't have rape you if you hadn't been dressed like that" defense.

Again, why should he have had to give his name? Perhaps he was afraid of reprisal. Perhaps he was nervous. Perhaps he just figured it wasn't any of the Congressclown's business.

Yes, I'm saying that one reason his friend did not assault the Congressclown is because he understands that here are very harsh penalties for doing so and, without someone there to film the event, it would have been the Congressclown's word against the college students'.

How is asking a question now a provocation? If it's really a provocation, then why don't you ever hear of this sort of thing happening at press conferences, where politicians are "provoked" dozens of times?

When did they ever get in his "personal space"? If he the ones that got in the Congressclown's "personal space", then why does the video show the opposite, that the Congressclown approached him and grabbed him?

    John Deere Fan,

We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this. We are two people who saw the same thing and saw parts of it differently.

And I'm not going to take the bait about that rape comment.

What I agree with you is that the Congressman is a nutcase. Clear and simple.

What I disagree with you about is that I think those two students were looking for their 15 minutes. Did they know exactly what they were going to get? No. But they sought it nonetheless.

    That's how I saw it.

You saw it completely differently. And that's OK.

OK. I understand why your inability to answer my questions makes you uncomfortable.

Well, that's certainly up to you. Most people who stood behind the claims would take a minute to explain why the comparison isn't accurate, but if you can't, that's OK.

But you just said that they knew it was "going to get ugly". So did they know or did they not know?

I see your points Scalett and they are well taken.

    There is another point: Maturity.

Supposedly the congressman should be a model of social maturity, well versed in adverse confrontations with the oft times obnoxious press.

However in this situation (and IMO) the roles were reversed.

Exactly. He should have just kept on walking or gave a polite non-commital answer.

Instead, he acts like a juvenile whose frontal lobe is not fully developed.
