Official statement from Liberty University regarding the review of Dr. Ergun Caner. Liberty will not be making any further comment at this time.

The body of the attached statement is as follows:
“After a thorough and exhaustive review of Dr. Ergun Caner’s public statements, a committee consisting of four members of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees has concluded that Dr. Caner has made factual statements that are self-contradictory. However, the committee found no evidence to suggest that Dr. Caner was not a Muslim who converted to Christianity as a teenager, but, instead, found discrepancies related to matters such as dates, names and places of residence. Dr. Caner has cooperated with the board committee and has apologized for the discrepancies and misstatements that led to this review. Dr. Caner’s current contractual term as Dean of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary expires on June, 30, 2010. Dr. Caner will no longer serve as Dean of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. The university has offered, and Dr. Caner has accepted, an employment contract for the 2010-2011 academic year. Dr. Caner will remain on the faculty of Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary as a professor.“

It's unfortunate, but it's what LU had to do to prevent their reputation from being tarnished.

Very sad indeed, not that they removed him but that they had to remove him.

It does seem ridiculous though that they are going to keep him on as a professor.

If he is really guilty of all of this, then of course he should be removed entirely from the faculty.

It seems like just playing politics to do what they have done.

Well, he is friends with Jerry Falwell Jr. and Jonathan Falwell among others. That may have saved his job. However being taken from President to Professor is a big deal and a huge humiliation. My guess is, and this is just a guess, that he will not be at Liberty University much longer. I would not be surprised if he gets "a better offer" within the next year or so. Liberty University has done more than I thought they would. I have seen universities, secular universities, do less with more damaging charges. Organizations tend to circle the wagon and get defensive in these situations. However the evidence here was clear. They can call it, "self-contradictory" statements, "discrepancies", and "misstatements", but we all know what they mean. If this were a matter of simple misstatements he would remain as President of the Seminary. The very fact that they are removing him as President tells me that the committee, and administration, knows what happened. The University is just trying to put a good spin on things and, while I don't like it, I understand it. It will be interesting to see who the interim President will be and who the new President will be. My guess is, and this is only a guess, they will find someone who is low key and not a walking public relations disaster.

Btw, if you look at Dr. Caner's twitter page it appears that he is out of town. So he has probably known about this for several days now.

I will also be interested to see Emir Caner's reaction. After all, he sat there while Ergun Caner lied about their family history.

I am truly sad that it came to this. Perhaps this will be a compelling lesson for us all that the truth of our words matters.

I'm praying for my brother in Christ and my Alma mater.

Just to prove how dishonest some professing Christians can be, SBC Today has proclaimed, "we praise God that Dr. Caner is exonerated as he is retained at Liberty on faculty" (source). First, nothing in Liberty University's statement speaks of Dr. Caner being "exonerated". Second, being demoted from President to average joe Professor is not the result of being "exonerated". Dr. Caner was removed because it was clear that he was not honest with his background. The SBC Today folks can turn off the comments if they want, but they can't run from their lies.

It's nice to see that SBC Today comes from the Kim Jong-Il school of journalism!

It is sad that it had to come to this. I think there are a couple on this board that need to apologize for the way the spoke of LU and publicly stated they would probably do nothing and sweep it under the floor.
Since these statements were made public on the board then the apologies need to be public on the board as well.

    A couple of notations.

First, I am proud of my alma mater. If he had fully cooperated with the investigation and acknowledged his wrong doing, they did the right thing.

Second, I am wondering what the statements of some Christian leaders seem to indicate since they said they consulted Liberty.

Third, I am praying for their search of a new President. My prayers is that they will appoint someone with a solid academic background (I would recommend Russell Moore from Louisville, but he would not get this position).

Finally, my prayers are for Ergun.

Its sad, but Prof. Caner brought it up on himself. You can't lie and get away with it. Not in this day and age. LU did the best they could under the circumstances, and my guess is Prof Caner will not be around for the fall quarter.

If he had any shred of decency left, he would resign and go far, far away in repentance. Alaska might be a good place to get a new start.

I find it interesting that on his homepage and twitter page Dr. Caner lists himself as "Ergun Caner is a Professor & Apologist at the Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and Graduate School in Lynchburg, Virginia." Notice there is nothing about him being "president" of LBTS. So far he has made no public statement about his removal or his "misstatements".

I am sad....because the class I took from Dr Caner was an eye-opening
class about world religions, and I loved his lectures. I looked up to him.

I am sad....because I am so tired of "the world" gloating when a well-known Christian falls - as we all fall, because we all come short of the glory of God. It's just a shame when it happens to a well known figure.
And it is a shame that many even here in this forum are possibly celebrating.

@Corbett - the man lied and brought it upon himself.

No one is celebrating. Its a shame he let it go this far and didn't man up and take responsibility for his actions.

Just because he is a charismatic teacher and personality does not mean that his actions are beyond reproach.

How can one make "factual statements" that are self-contradictory? If one makes factual statements, then those statements are true.He has made hundreds of statements which are at odds with the truth.

That has not been the primary focus of the charges against him.

So, at this late date he has supposedly apologized for mere discrepancies and misstatements. That does not quite cut it. They could not bring themselves to say the "L" word. That would be too harsh I guess.

He was the President of the seminary.

I'm glad that he was forced to step down by the board. But this did not go far enough. He should not be employed as a professor at any Christian school of higher education.

Prospective students at Liberty will be held to higher standards than he has met.

Caner has not made a full-fledged confession of his lies. He was still professing his innocence in this whole sordid mess just days ago.

I feel that Liberty made a half-hearted attempt to recitify the situation but fell quite short.

Caner should be held accountable for his lies. If he dares to speak to churches and other groups of Christians including his students -- he needs to come clean. He actually should not accept any speaking engagements. Even if he had made a full confession, there are consequences for this kind of conduct.

I feel sorry for his wife, kids and relatives. But he has not stepped up to the plate yet.

I'm in full agreement with those sentiments Peggy. I have said elsewhere that he should get out of the limelight completely and get a blue-collar job at a factory. He needs to be humbled.

Who is gloating? I'm certainly not. The situation has not been properly dealt with.

Ergun Caner should have been man enough to admit his constant lying over the past nine years. It could have been kept in-house, but he was too proud to confess his sins. It would not have reached the present point if Ergun had done the right thing when he was confronted with his contradictions back in Feb.

He still has not come forward to admit his failings in a public venue. It's a real shame.

    You are grossly mistaken.
