Knowing what we know about King David (the good and the bad), if he were alive today, would he be acceptable as a pastor of a Baptist church?

    Why or why not?

No, multiple wives. Don't blame me, blame Paul or The Holy Spirit. They wrote it.

Yep, David, Moses, Noah...all men who just couldn't hack it in the Baptist church today. Kind of sad.

David and Moses were political leaders. Noah was a father. None of them were called as Pastors. God gave the requirements for a pastor.. argue with Him about those requirements.

It's not kind of sad.. unless biblical requirements are sad.

It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, each have "had" their own calling. Similarly David,Moses,Noah,Abraham had different assignments ect....not ALL had the same CALL. :wavey:

    Thank you Mr. Obvious.

    I'm not arguing with anybody.

I find it very sad that some of the greatest men of God in biblical history would be shunned in the typical Baptist church today. I made no mention of them pastoring. I made a general statement as to how these men would be received in the Baptist church today.

The original post was about him being a pastor. I thought maybe you were speaking about the original thread. I was mistaken.

The fact is that David would have been asked to step down in a local church today because of his adultery and murder. Is that a problem for anyone? Would you continue to allow him to be a member in good standing in your church until he repented? Or would you do what Paul commanded to be done to the man in 1 Corinthians?

With MOses, it was God who shunnned him and said he couldn't go into the Promised Land. Both of these men did something as a leader they were not supposed to do and received God's judgement.

With Noah, he didn't sin, but sin was done to him. And God dealt with that sin.

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Obvious

And the thing that must be remembered is, these men didn't live under a specific requirement as a pastor today does. We know the bible says, "the husband of one wife." They really had no such requirement. So the multiple wives thing isn't fair.

The adultery and murder part is fair game. Were a pastor to commit adultery and murder, he should step down. David was allowed by God to remain as king, but he received judgement. His house had trouble from then on. Again, the pastor has specific requirements on him that even a king didn't have.

Seriously? Did you forget the OT?

Deuteronomy 17:14-17 When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, 'I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,' 15 you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman. 16 "Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, 'You shall never again return that way.' 17 "He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

I don't call that a requirement for office in the same way we have elder/bishop office requirements in the NT.

    Interesting.

So if the law wasn't a requirement, then what exactly was it?

    Moderator's note

This thread, at best, has a very tangental relation to the forum. So far, there's little to speak of in relation to pastoral ministry, etc.

Against my better wisdom, I'm going to let it stand for a while. But tread carefully. Very carefully. This could go off the rails quickly.

David would be rejected in many "churchy" circles because he was a career military man. Professional Protectors are often shunned in the ministry (I have been so).
