In another thread, John of Japan brought up the Dean Burgon Society.

I had never heard of it. So click on here for info on the DBS.

Now that you know all about it, is it an organization you would like to join?

Not in 5 million years. And Dean Burgon would not be a member either.

I agree with Mexdeaf. But the downloadable videos of their annual meetings are very entertaining!

Just checked the site. MY EYES, THEY BLEED!!! What colorblind HTML imbecile made that site???

As to the content, I would laugh until I cry but unfortunately I know that this tripe is what they actually espouse. Because of this I am apt to completely miss the laughter and go straight to weeping. :(

In the early 70's I looked into it (Maranatha BBC hosted a meeting) but the extremists were beginning to raise their "only" head. I got a book and realized they were not my kinda folks.

Doc Cassidy is a gracious supporter of the KJV and I love the man. When I post something "barbed" at the KJV he just shakes his head and probably whispers to himself, "Bob, Bob, Bob".

Know he had been a past officer of the Dean Burgon bunch but no longer.

    His comments certainly were "prideful".

Can't we all just get along? Pass the biscuits! With a lot of honey they might be okay.

You know, I just shake my head. Some of his comments were very strange. I mean, what does it have to do with anything if he's written more books that I have? Either my criticisms of Dr. Williams' book were valid or they were not! I mean, Peter Ruckman has written many more books than Williams. Does that make him more right than Williams?

I have some respect for Dr. Waite, the founder of the DBS. He got some genuine degrees from a good school, Dallas, and I'm sure he means well and wants to help people. Many years ago I bought some books from the DBS that you couldn't get anywhere else at the time: Edward Miller on textual criticism and some Burgon books. And I respect H. D. Williams for doing the hard work to get a medical degree, and no doubt doing much good for his patients over the years (though I think as a translation expert he makes a good MD).

The society has gone downhill since those early days, if the silly defense against my book review (that's all it was, folks!) is any measure. After going from a society that claims to follow in Burgon's footsteps to one that promoted Gail Riplinger all the way until last year, and that even now sells a book (Moorman on textual criticism) that quotes Peter Ruckman as an expert all through it (you can download a PDF somewhere), they have lost my respect.

There is some hope. Phil Stringer spoke at their society meeting about Riplinger, and was humble enough to apologize for not believing folks who warned him years ago about her. If they will continue in that vein of humility, maybe they can salvage their reputation.

I believe right now that Dr. Waite is engaged in a war of words with Gail Riplinger. Waite dared to mention her three marriages among other things, & her homeboys rose to her defense, most likely at her instigation.

I also respect Dr. Waite. I have heard him speak and know his family. Like all of us are wont to do from time to time I think he has let some of his associations get the better of him.

I would say it has more to do with the quality of the work, not the amount. I think it was J. Vernon McGee who said it took him between 8 and 12 hours and at times 20 some to prepare a sermon, and some of them come out sounding like he spend 5 minutes on it. All of our work isn't as good as we had hoped for. One needs to take the good review with the bad and learn from each, don't get mad.

I found Williams' response to John of Japan's review very unprofessional, pejorative, and self-aggrandizing.

I think the paucity of material about translation in the bibliography of his book on the subject shows how little effort he put into it--only 15 sources actually on translation. And this was supposed to be a doctoral dissertation!

Correct. So now we have IFB men defending a female "Bible teacher" who has been divorced twice. My IFB father and grandfather are currently spinning in their graves at about 950 rpm. :tonofbricks:
