These two are very much alike. I have mentioned that that the NASBU has had some difficult encounters with the English language. It certainly does. However, the NASBU has the edge over the ESV in that department.

Some snippets will follow from the book of Acts. E=ESV;N=NASBU.

    2:14
E : lifted up his voice ... give ear to my words
N : raised his voice ... give heed to my words

    3:17
E : as did also your rulers
N : just as your rulers did also

    4:1
    E : came upon them
N : came up to them

    6:3
    E : good repute
    N : good reputation

    6:12
E : they came upon him and seized him
N : they came up to him and dragged him away

    7:3
E : go out from your land and from your kindred
N : Leave your country and your relatives

    7:25
E : God was giving them salvation by his hand
N : God was granting them deliverance through him

    7:26
E : Why do you wrong each other?
N : Why do you injure one another?

    7:27
    E : thrust him aside
    N : pushed him away

    The ESV Is Lacking

    Zephaniah

    1:14
    E: the mighty man
    N : the warrior

    2:11
E : The Lord will be awesome against them;for he will famish all the gods of the earth
N : The Lord will be terrifying to them, for He will starve all the gods of the earth
[The word awesome has been overused these days to describe even trivial things as great. The GW translation says "The Lord will terrify them."Also,"he will famish..." is just plain inadequate English]

    3:4
    E : fickle
    N : reckless

    3:16
E : let not your hands grow weak
N : Do not let your hands fall limp.

    Haggai

    2:1
E : In the seventh month,on the twenty-first day of the month
N : On the twenty-first day of the seventh month

    2:19
E : Is the seed yet in the barn?
N : Is the seed still in the barn?

    2:22
E : every one by the sword of his brother
N : everyone by the sword of another

It's simply not accurate to say the NASB is more clear in all places as you state. I have shown from 1 Peter 1 just a few where the ESV has better renderings.

I'm so glad Rippon knows how to select text and use CNTL-C and CNTL-V. I wonder how many people get tired of these endless verse by verse comparisons.

Tom,this OP certainly doesn't look at all like the OP's I have had before regarding the ESV.Why you are saying such false things is puzzling.

Relax, Rippon. I'm jousting and jesting. Your hatred of the ESV and it's major proponents has been well established. I just like rattling your cage on it from time to time ;)

There is a current thread dealing with Bible translations. The subject came up regarding the readability factor as it pertains to the ESV and NASB(U). This old thread of mine illustrates that there are a number of places in which the latter has better renderings than the former. By "better" I mean the English of the NASB(U) is plainer than that of the ESV. The English usage of the ESV should never become the standard.

I have zero issue with the ESV language. I also like the NIV and NASB. Don't see what all the anti-ESV fuss is about.

You are getting worse than those NIV11 haters :)

When you say you are just kidding...does that apply to your sentence with the smiley-face alone? Or does it also apply to sentence #3?
