    GLENN BECK’S “RESTORING HONOR” RALLY IN WASHINGTON, DC…AND EVANGELICALS

    EVANGELICALS AND GLENN BECK

    Some has been said and written about evangelicals “compromising” by sharing the stage this weekend at Glenn Beck’s Friday night Kennedy Center event (for approximately 2,000 pastors and Christian leaders) and being seated on the platform (nearly 200 seats) of the Lincoln Memorial during the “Restoring Honor” Rally on Saturday, August 28. This all stems from the fact of Beck’s Mormon faith.



    I have not been criticized for going to the rally (at least as of this date), but I have seen writing attacking two men in whom I believe: James Robison (who will not even be at the rally, but whose video might be) and David Barton. Both of these men have impeccable credentials in our biblical faith.



    I recognize that people of good will and good faith might differ with each other on this. Yet there is no need to “de-Christianize” each other over the matter.



    If I may, allow me to state how I dealt with the issue of evangelical-Mormon working partnerships during the Prop 8 battle here in California.



    LESSONS LEARNED AND GUIDELINES FOLLOWED FROM PROP 8

    We, as evangelical pastors (primarily in San Diego), were one of the first groups to organize regarding the defense of marriage. We later learned what the Catholics were doing, and we worked side-by-side – with great synergy and effect. The relationship proved to be spectacular and continues to this day.



    It was later that some of the hierarchy of the Mormon Church called and asked to meet with me. Candidly, I did not – at first – want to meet with them and did not want to work with them. My disagreement with Mormon belief is substantial. Yet I knew that the battle for marriage was so immense in scope. The Sacramento based Schubert-Flint Public Affairs, working with Ron Prentice of ProtectMarriage.com, had outlined what was needed. We needed to activate 25,000 persons to knock on doors immediately, and to organize 100,000 persons, “boots on the ground,” by Election Day. In addition, many other webinars, satellite simulcasts and phone banks were planned, along with a 40-day prayer and fast period culminating with 33,000 persons in a 12-hour prayer meeting – 10 am to 10 pm – in Qualcomm Stadium three days before the election.



    Several months before the election, three officials from the Mormon Church came to my office. The meeting was cordial, respectful and warm. We discussed ways to work along side each other in this battle. (cont. on facebook)

    I am very uncomfortable with what Beck is doing, and find him impossible to support.

    I am an ex LDS member.

    I am someone who trustED a portion of what Beck had to say. I admired his efforts in the Terri Schindler-Schiavo situation.

    However, finding out he is LDS shattered any hope, faith, or trust in what Glenn Beck says.

    Anyone with his brains who honestly studies out the Mormon faith MUST conclude it is illogical and false. The evidence is out there, now in large amounts, and Beck is not the type of man who would put his eternal fate in something he has not studied out.

    That leaves me with one of two conclusions.

    1. His reasoning skills are insufficient, making him kinda like Obama. Good looking, likeable as a person, very interesting to listen to and can make looking at a rock fascinating, but incapable of coming to logical conclusions, making the thought process that led to the end conclusion and the conclusion itself untrustworthy.

    2. He didn't merely fail miserably in his efforts to understand mormonism. He purposely misleads people and is using his position to do it. This would make him, obviously, untrustworthy.

    Either way, he's not trustworthy. Normally I don't have a problem with anyone and everyone coming together as a cause, but everyone coming together needs to be honest. I have no problem working on a cause with someone who claims to be an atheist. However, is someone says "I'm a Christian and want to represent myself as a Christian but I'm not" (which is where mormonism is...it is NOT Christianity and only recently tried to more closely align itself with mainstream Christianity) then that person is one of the lowest persons on the face of this earth.

    So I sure hope it's number one and he's just not done his homework for whatever reasons, which I'm sure would be very interesting to hear.

    I hope it's not number two. I hate feeling paranoid and that makes me feel paranoid. Normally I mock people who see conspiracies like this, but in this case? I just don't know that Beck is stupid enough for me to use what I chose as explanation number one.

    I think I may just write on the LDS church and post it on my blog and send him a link.

    The idea that we can improve the moral climate thru politics is, at best, semi-Pelagian. Politicizing the church will NEVER accomplish and good.

    At the same time, we need to work at political stuff because it is the right thing to do and because our grand kids have to live in this world. Reformed people call it "sphere sovereignty," I call it compartmentalization. NOT because we can moralize the world so that Jesus will/can return.

    But you people who "believe in" the rapture and expect to get raptured boggle my mind with your political activity! It is a great demonstration of fence sitting! Post-mil rapturism . . . a double-minded person is unstable in all his ways, something like that. (As a group) The only honest pre-mil pre-trib dispensationalists I have met are the Plymouth Bretheren . . . who barely admit that they exist.

    Their only (theological) concern is getting people into the lifeboats before the Rapture occurs. I met with the PBs for most of 15 years but could no longer listen to "rapture" sermons and pre-mil pre-trib SS lessons after 1988 - 40 years, one generation after the establishment of nation Israel.
