Would you join a church that burned the Koran?

I know you're working on the poll right now and I'll vote when it's ready but my simple answer:

    NO

I cannot imagine anywhere in Scripture where this sort of thing is even slightly condoned. Anywhere.

I remember reading about a group burning German books in protest of Hitler abd Germany during the war. Turns out one book was a Bible!

My answer is also No. Don't burn any book.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Could someone explain to me what exactly is wrong with burning a book that praises satan and encourages people to be devil worshippers?

So, did Jesus do unto the money changers as he would have them do unto him? Did Jesus drive demons out of people so that the demons would do unto him the same?

Stop misapplying Scripture Crabby...it would be oh so helpful.

Show me where Jesus or any of His followers in the Bible did anything like this. Show me where they stood and protested outside pagan temples. Where they knocked down the ashera poles. Where they did anything but spread the Gospel and teach and grow the church. What is our job as Christians? Do we want to be known more for what we stand for or against?

Watch out. You are going to get in trouble by ashing where Jesus asked ......... at least I have a number of times here. :)

I would never join such a church. I wonder what else they emphasis. Certainly agape love is not one that would be big on their list.

Crabby...your answer is "Do unto others are you would have them do to you.". Again I ask, did Jesus drive out the money changers so that they would do the same unto him? Why have you avoided this question?

Show me where Jesus or any of His followers had a church service with children dancing around and dragging ribbons behind them? I don't personally like that kind of service, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it, Biblically speaking. Same goes with this. We don't have a direct example of this from Jesus or his followers, yet I don't think God frowns upon us removing literature that praises satan.

If a man is holding a gun to your head, however wrong that may be, it is not a good idea to provoke him further.

I am not saying to surrender your rights. Canada lost 550 soldiers fighting for the rights and freedom of South Koreans. So, I certainly believe in speaking out against wrongs.

The equation of building a mosque and this action is wrong. They have the same right to build their mosque as any baptist has in building their church.

That said, you are not dealing with a rational nation and common sense needs to prevail.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Yes, he did. He, in several places, came down hard on the fundamentalists of his day. They were his own religion, but were misusing it, violating it.

I stand by the golden rule. If we did that more there would not be so much hatred directed toward us as there is.

    Violence begets violence begets violence.

OK, so you agree that Jesus drove out the money changers from the temple and he expected them to act the same back to him.

So, I'm having a little trouble following your logic then.

You say that we are to do to others as we would have them do to us. Jesus gave us an example where he physically drove the money changers out of the temple, using a whip, and he overturned their tables.

Why, again, is it wrong for us to burn a book that glorifies satan?

I see great danger in taking that passage liberally, as you are doing. We could justify any deed toward another by using that passage in a liberal way.

It seems to me that if we take a liberal view of that passage we negate much of what Jesus taught in the way we treat others, such as, 'love your enemy,' 'turn the other cheek.'

Debating with you is like debating with a 5 year old. Your use of the word "liberal" to try and goad me is beyond childish.

But, let's go your path anyway. Please explain to me how it is "liberal" to attempt and reconcile to pieces of Scripture.

You have said that we should apply the "golden rule" to this situation. I've asked you how the "golden rule" applies to Jesus driving out the money changers. You've yet to address that. Was Jesus following the "golden rule" at that point in his ministry?

Perhaps the better question is, "Will burning the Q'ran help us be more or less effective in our efforts to evangelize Muslim people?"

For crying out loud, one would think that we're still under OT Law the way some persons respond to issues like this... :tonofbricks:

Oh, and if I need to say it, no, I do not think that buring the Q'ran is a good idea, and I would leave a church (or never start up in the first place) that thought that this was a good way to go. Why they are trying to imitate the ones they ought to be evangelizing is beyond me.

I do not see one instance of there being ANY teaching about attacking another religion except in the Old Testament. Equating this to dancing in church is quite apples and oranges. We're talking principles here. There's not one principle we can hang this action on from Scripture. None.

You are quite incorrect. To try to use that passage to justify burning the Koran is to take a very liberal interpretation of that passage. I was not attempting to goad you. I was simply showing that you were taking liberties with the passage and that is liberal. It is another topic, but I find many who say they are conservative and believe the Bible literally often take liberal interpretations in trying to justify their positions. For instance in another thread on unleavened bread, the deacon was insisting had to be just flour and water ... but I bet you breakfast that same deacon would say it wasn't wine ... as is reported in the Bible:
but was grape juice. Strict interpretation on bread, but liberal interpretation of 'wine.'

[Actually unleavened bread is bread without yeast. It is not restricted to just flour and water.]

Now, if a group was entering a church to harm it or desecrate it, your quoting that passage would be more on target.

Can you not see that Jesus was following the golden rule. If he were found polluting his fathers house .... which would never happen ...... he would have expected to be driven out.

If this case, using an extension of your logic, burning the Koran is ok and in return it would be ok for them to burn Bibles.

I see no reason to do something that will drive people further away from Christ.
