.......and, I really would hate to see these fish invade into the great lakes and/or our rivers here. I understand that they've basically already taken over the rivers and streams of Europe.

But an Asian Carp Czar?.......heheh, if I were a terrorist.......why not? If I were an actual terrorist hiding out in this country I'd do everything possible to cause America grief, and that would include turning carp loose in the great lakes. No carp czar could stop that.

I used to catch them when I lived in New England.

Use a single kernel of canned or fresh corn for bait.

The big ones have an earthy taste but its easy to cover up with spices, smoke house treament, BBQ sauce, etc.

I caught a 20 pounder under a mulberry tree and it was great, tasted like mulberries (they are mostly vegetarians).

FYI Hank, these asian carp are not the the same fish (common carp) you were catching in New England. These are total plankton eaters (which also makes them good eating) and they're not caught on rod & reel; they're even very difficult to net on a commercial scale, however I've read that there is a net being developed that will hold them. We have bookoo of those common carp in the waters here, but no asian, yet.

Amazing, they look like flying fish.

Common Carp can be caught using bow and arrow which is legal (some folks shoot them - illegal).

Wonder if Asian Carp can be caught by archery when they are being still in the water.

Harry Reid is planning to attach an Asian fish clause to the next defense bill that will grant amnesty, provide endangered species protection, and extensive research funding for these illegal immigrants and their descendants.

These asian carps can get enormous, like 100#, and fast too, which is typical of any filter feeder. From what I gather from reading and the videos they linger/feed close to the surface (which stands to reason, they feed on algae and plankton which is going to be denser at the surface because of more sunlight) and they jump out of the water like that due to being spooked or from the vibrations of the boat motor. I would imagine if you approached with stealth with a bow it wouldn't be any different than the other carp. I've bow hunted most of my life, and oddly, I've never bow fished. There's been many occasions that if I'd had a bow I could have gotten a shot at carp and buffalo suckers. I've caught many carp and buffalo (up to 30#) on trot lines using dough balls on small hooks on the bottom. I reiterate, fresh buffalo sucker meat is hard to beat, it's just that most folks don't want to fool with the bones. Those videos of the USGS guy cleaning the silver asian carps reminded me a great deal of cleaning buffalo suckers, and what he said about their excellent taste also.

For real, the best solution to this problem of carp invasion could well be for us to keep them 'eaten down' (heheh, the Chinese do it). I personally believe it's inevitable that they'll be throughout the great lakes and Canada (they thrive in cold water) before it's over with. Check this one out from CNN Fortune:

........it's like you said, "when life gives you lemons......"
