Since some go out of their way to point out the flaws in the ESV, I thought in the interest of fairness and unbias, I'd point out places where it is as clear, if not clearer, than other new translations (say, over the past couple of decades or more)

    From 1 Peter 1:

    v. 10
    NASB: As to this salvation
    ESV: Concerning this salvation,

    v.15
    NASB: be holy yourselves
    ESV: you also be holy

    v. 17
NASB: If you address as Father
ESV: if you call on him as Father

    v.19
NASB: but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
(ESV) but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
    v.20
NASB: for the sake of you
    ESV: for your sake
    v. 22
NASB: Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren
ESV: Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love

    More to come.

Tom, that is an unfair comparison. The NASB is renounded for taking literal, grammatical translation to the point of being wooden. It is very true to the original at the expense of English understandability. :)

    Bingo!

Often we see translations comapred on here and the translations are not apples to apples. IOW, it's not fair to compare a formal equivalent to a dynamic or functional equivalent translation.

That said, I'd disagree mildly with you in that the NASB and the ESV are in the same "family" as formal equivalent translations.

And I can point to NASB verses that are clearer than the so called "less-wooden" ESV, btw.

I see them both as being clear in meaning. Just like saying y'all or you guys or all of you. It would depend on preference, but I believe most would understand all of the simular terms.

I have an NASB Word Study Bible and the leather ESV Study Bible. I love them both but its hard to carry them both with me to Church because they make my satchel way too heavy

I was listening to John MacArthur on the way home from church today and according to him, the ESV is going to be THE bible of the churches soon.
Based on what I saw at Lifeway the other day, I think he may be right. The ESV was the most plentiful version on the shelves.

ESV is running 4th and 5th in the Christian Bookseller Association's listing both by $$ and unit volume of sales.

NIV and KJV and NKJV beating it out.

I'd like to hear this. What was his sermon topic/title, or was this more blurb from the ad king of Evangelicals

Ha! Well actually it was at the end of his sermon, which I missed. It was on Moody radio out of Chattanooga.

If it was at the end, I'd bet my life it's his promo for his new release of his study Bible now available in ESV.

You see, that tells me that you never watched his endorsement for the ESV which I mentioned in another thread. In that 'promo" he is sitting down in his study, not preaching.

Wow....you mean ad blurbs are never taped anywhere outside the pulpit? SHOCKING! :tongue3:

And how do you know it's his private study? All ministries have a room set aside for tapings of this sort, and I've seen this one before. It looks nothing like his study.

No offense, but this tells me you're reaching.

For the 100th time I was going to view the video and decided to use your site. But the video is down. Given this is copyrighted (Mac is a marketer par excellence, to the inth) I wonder if he had to take it down.

HA! I hadn't caught this before. He says this edition is like no other study Bible he's ever seen. Odd....pages I've seen look exactly like the layout of the NKJV (publisher standards taken out of consideration).

When it comes to marketing hyperbole, no one does it better :tongue3: A friend of mine and I were having lunch and talked about how ironic it is that John, who critiqued church marketing in Ashamed of the Gospel used a great marketing tack with his publisher to sell the self-same book

And yet you claimed on 9/12 that you had watched the video. You had asked for documentation of him saying the things I had quoted from him. You still have not seen the video after all this time and you are still making your unfounded comments.

You told Amy that you'd bet your life what she heard at the end of his sermon was his ESV promo. I said it was not part of any sermon -- he's sitting in his study -- a study --whatever,giving his endorsement of the ESV.

Get your facts checked before launching out on your skiff.

Not so fast. I said I was going to view it for the 100th time. That means I've seen it 99 times before. I did. Now it's 101 the next time I view it. Then 102....then 103.....understand?

More to come after I hear from a couple of folks at GCC and TMS. Gonna try one more shot with the facts for ya, Rippon.
