    Gas tax

    How much does your State or Commonwealth add for tax?
    Check this chart

    Remember, to add an additional 18.4 cents for Federal Excise tax. In addition, local governments may add their own tax.

    Without tax, we are not paying a whole lot for gas. And remember part of the "profit" the gas company makes goes to pay for corporate income tax...

    In our taxi, we charge $3.20 per mile.
    part of that amount goes to pay for the tax on the gas I buy....

    Surely it couldn't possibly be worse now!! I would think that living in such a tax-free state as New York for as long as you have, you would know that!!! :smilewinkgrin:

    Americans are always whining about the price of gas. Actually, if you factor in inflation, it is less per gallon now than when I was a kid. And compared to Europe drivers in the US are faring very well.

    Well read my post ... it talked about taxes in Europe in the quote.

    Factoring in inflation the taxes on gas is much lower now then when I was a kid. Maybe the taxes should be doubled. People need to walk and bicycle more. LOL

    Are those economies doing so much better than us that we should follow their lead?

    Don't believe I said that, but then you are good at misdirection of answers. I gave the information for a comparison. But, I guess you will continue to nit-pick and whine, whine whine. Americans, in general, do not see to realize how good life if for them. Do a bit of travel and learn to really appreciate what we have in America! One area in which we are far behind the Europeans is in public transportation.

    What misdirection?

    I asked why you want to compare U.S. tax policy with Europe?

    Why compare with them?

    What whinning?

    And if I were to tell you just how great my life is you would no doubt say that I am bragging.

    And why compare the U.S. to Europe?

    Are we supposed to be happy that we are not at the very bottom of the heap in terms of lifestyle?

    ad nauseum...

    Actually the core whining is not so much about a tax on gas but about another tax upon a commodity and a people (and two successive generations) with multiple taxation into the trillions of dollars without representation, without an explanation, without a referendum, without a vote.

    I wouldn't have a big problem with gas taxes, if it were used solely for roads, ect. Doesn't work that way.

    I realize that gas tax is higher in Europe than in the States, but that is not justification for increasing our taxes. It was stated, the govt should raise gas taxes, so we will exercise more. Likewise since some countries draft men into the military - than I suppose we should do likewise

    Once again, the power to tax is the power to control.
    John Marshall said it even better: "The power to tax is the power to destroy"

    Why is it some States or Commonwealths get by on only 15 - 20 cents per gallon, while NY and others are in the 30 cent + range?
