The ESV is about a dozen years newer than the NRSV,but it shows a bit more care in updating the language of the RSV.

    ESV=E
    NRSV=N

    1 Corinthians

    3:21
E : let no one boast in men
N : let no one boast about human leaders
[NET : no more boasting about mere mortals.]

    4:8
E : would that you did reign
N : I wish you had become kings [same as NET]

    6:11
E : And such were some of you
N : And this is what some of you used to be

    7:25
    E : the betrothed
    N : virgins [Greek:virgins]

    7:28
E : will have worldly troubles
N : will experience distress in this life

    7:37
E : whoever is firmly established
N : stands firm in his resolve
    [NET: firm in his commitment]

    8:2
E : If anyone imagines that he knows something,he does not yet know as he ought to know
N : Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge

    8:8
E : Food will not commend us to God
N : Food will not bring us close to God [same as NET]

    10:12
E : Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall
N : So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall

    10:26
    E : the fullness thereof
    N : its fullness
[We don't need to use the word "thereof" any longer. Later in the 17th century the word "its" became very useful.]

    11:18
    E : I believe it in part
N : to some extent I believe it

    11:27
E : will be guilty of profaning
    N : will be answerable

    13:3
E : if I deliver up my body to be burned
N : if I hand over my body so that I may boast
[According to the NET notes the Byzantine reading is impossible --it wasn't in the Koine Greek]

    14:14
E : my mind is unfruitful
N : my mind is unproductive [Same as the NET translation.]

    15:34
E : Wake up from your drunken stupor
N : Come to a sober and right mind

    15:58
    E : always abounding
    N : always excelling

    16:2
E : store it up as he may prosper
N : save whatever extra you earn

    16:13
    E : act like men,be strong
    N : be courageous,be strong
    [NET: show courage,be strong]

E : just as you did partially acknowledge us
N : as you have already understood us in part

    2:13

    N : I said farewell to them

    3:14
E : that same veil remains unlifted

    1 Thessalonians

    2:2
E : in the midst of much conflict
N : in spite of great opposition

    2:8
    E : So,being affectionately desirous of you
N : So deeply do we care for you

    2 Thessalonians

    3:3
E : he will establish you
N : he will strengthen you

    1 Timothy

    1:9
E : those who strike their fathers and mothers
N : those who kill their fathers or mothers
[Both are bad,but mere striking,or hitting is not what it means.Murder is being spoken of.]

    1:13
    E : insolent opponent
    N : a man of violence
[ Insolence is too weak. And did you notice that the NRSV uses the word "man",not an inclusive word like "opponent."?]

    1:18
E : wage the good warfare
N : fight the good fight
[ In verse 12 of the same chapter the ESV has "fight the good fight."]

    2:9
E : should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control
N : should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing

    5:22
E : Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands
N : Do not ordain anyone hastily

    6:10
E : pireced themselves with many pangs
N : pireced themselves with many pains

    6:14
E : unstained and free from reproach
N : without spot or blame

    6:20
E : guard the deposit entrusted to you
N : guard what has been entrusted to you

    2 Timothy

    2:16
    E : irreverent babble
    N : profane chatter

    3:2
    E : lovers of self
    N : lovers of themselves

    3:6
    E : capture weak women
    N : captivate silly women
[Be honest,"capture weak women" sends the wrong message -- doesn't it?]

    4:8
    E : Henceforth
    N : From now on
    [who says "henceforth" these days?]

    Titus

    1:8
    E : a lover of good
    N : a lover of goodness

    Philemon

    v.15
E : he was parted from you
N : he was separated from you

    Hebrews

    1:5
E : I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a son
N : I will be his Father, and he will be my Son

    2:4

    James

    1:27
E : before God and the Father is this:to visit orphans
N : before God, the Father,is this: to care for orphans
[Two problems with the ESV rendering:It looks like God and Father are divided, and to visit orphans is weak -- looking after or caring for are more accurate.]

    4:9
    E : Be wretched
    N : Lament

    5:8
    E : establish your hearts
    N : strengthen your hearts

[The ESV has poor grammar here.]

    2 Peter

N : heard this voice come from heaven
[Who uses the word "borne" these days? Maybe I should google that.]

N : the testimony they had given

    11:10
E : will rejoice over them and make merry
N : will gloat over them and celebrate
[The word "gloat" is a far better word choice than "rejoice"."Make merry" is not an example of up-to-date language which ESV blurbs advertise.Perhaps it is considered lofty"literary English" which Ryken "waxes on" about so often.]

    13:7

N : It was given authority

    Mark 4:3

Here is "an improvement" that may be of interest.

Older ESV : Listen! A sower went out to sow.
New ESV : Listen! Behold,a sower went out to sow.

The revised ESV is just following the KJV,NASB etc. Is the redundancy necessary?

So you would place the NRSV between the Niv and the Esv in how it renders phrasings then?
