Does anyone know if there are RA seminaries who would accept a Luther Rice MDIV for entrance in a doctorate program for the full-time pastor.

A few years ago I was told from Southern that SBTS would. I'm not sure that is so now....

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Try LBTS

    Hello Pastor Shaun,
You may want to consider Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. I believe that they will accept a Luther Rice MDIV to satisfy admission into their DMIN program.

What degree are you talking about - DMin or PhD (or other)??? That would make a difference. From my experience, most schools take a case by case basis w/ different accreditation. I'm in a ThM program at SEBTS w/out the right accreditation.

Also, do you care about denomination affiliations for a school?

I am not so certain about SBTS. I think it would be case by case with them. SEBTS will take LRU grads for their D.Min. program. At the LRU Alumni luncheon I also met a fellow finishing his D.Min. at Midwestern, though he did say something about having to take a few courses before full admission (which he said were far easier than his LRU classes).

Also, as someone has said, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary will take LRU grads for their D.Min. program - I was accepted into that program (I did the LRU M.Div.). So will Baptist Bible Seminary in Clark Summit. And you could get into Mid-America without difficulty as well.

Just looking at options for a DMIN....

    Anyone else know?

any LRU graduates doing a DMIN somewhere? What has been your experience?

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what is the purpose behind the DMin? What do you expect to accomplish with it? I am going to assume it is not so you can be called Dr. Shaun. Though I don't know you, I will give you that benefit right away. I am just curious what a DMin is going to do for you. I am of the opinion that education ought to be a means to ministry. So I guess I'm wondering how a DMin will do this. Please forgive my insatiable curiosity :D

I won't answer for Shaun, but since I am pursuing a D.Min (though I decided not to matriculate this year, I probably will next), I will answer the question in general from my perspective. I am not sure that a D.Min. is a means to ministry as you say, since one has to be actively involved in ministry to be admitted to most D.Min. programs. Rather, I view the program as an opportunity to further develop pastoral skills (like preaching or pastoral counseling) that are highly useful in ministry. A well-structured D.Min. program taught by a good faculty can benefit a pastor, and subsequently a church, more than most people realize, IMO.

Anyone pursuing the degree for prestige is silly, I think, since it is way to expensive and time-consuming an endeavor to pursue for the sake of what will surely be a house of cards (i.e., the respect it will bring is without any real substance). And, if one stays in his current ministry after graduation, it does not mean a higher salary (since the church probably helped pay for the tuition). As many say, a doctorate for a preacher is a lot like a curl in a pig's tail; it might tickle the hams but it doesn't make more bacon. :)

However, it is not a useless endeavor if one pursues it in order to better or more effectively serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

I want more!!! You have to know what I mean hear....undergrad was good but you always felt a desire for more. Seminary has been good too, but I want to go deeper. I am a preacher...I love to preach...a call to preach is a call to prepare...I want to continue my studies until I feel like the Lord is pleased....

I guess I'm still confused. I've always felt like the more I preach the more I improve.

Is it your delivery you want to improve? If so, have you thought about an MA in speech or something like that? If it is sermon prep and exegesis, then woulnd't a PhD serve you better? I don't know many DMin programs that focus on exegesis.

    Just trying to understand...

I doubt an MA in speech would help much - and I find the thought a little comical. But honestly, what about this has you confused? There are plenty of D.Min programs that focus on expository preaching. It is not a difficult concept to understand that a 3-year guided doctoral-level study on expository preaching would likely help one to improve in the skill of.... preaching.

    Thank you for responding..

However, I don't understand why this thread has gotten difficult. I never once said that I was continuing my studies because I thought "I couldn't preach."

All I asked for was a simple answer to a question I had...

I don't know why so many people want the "why are you pursuing a certain degree?" question answered.

It is okay if you don't understand! The good Lord above has already worked this within my heart. I just wanted to know my options....

I appreciate those who are truly concerned. However, I have read too many posts that discourage people from wanting to further their education because they want to be a doctor, or teach at a seminary, or something similar.

I am wanting to do a pastoral ministry/preaching track to help better myself for the cause of Christ....

BTW, Siberian...I looked at MABTS, and they have what I am looking for at great rates....

Siberian & Shaun, I didn't mean to make this negative. I'm sorry.

When it comes to the DMin route, I'm completely oblivious. It has never seemed like a route one should go, but I mainly attribute that perspective to the fact that I don't understand many DMin programs. Please forgive my curiosity. I don't mean to come off as wanting to detract your educational ambition. Your motivation for the cause of Christ is amiable and an example to us all.

Next time, less questions... I promise :D
