New NIV available Nov 1 Online

On one hand, I look forward to this new added translation. On the other hand, I don't know if I will be able to keep up with all of the discussion from the various translation enthusiasts.

Interesting: This is just too coincidental. We need to call one of those midnight talk-show hosts or better yet "Conspiracy Theories".

The last Harry Potter book (Number 7) was split into two movies due to the sheer volume (and I'm sure the sheer amount of money Warner Bros. expects to pocket.)

The first comes out Oct 31, 2010 or Nov. 1, 2010 depending on location and the second comes out sometime after March of 2011 if they can wrap up the editing.

There's GOT to be a conspiracy theory in here somewhere. :laugh: :saint:

 

Good idea. Our former wrestler/governor Uncle Jesse says that season two of conspiracy theory will blow our mind more than season one. Maybe he can use this in season three.

I look forward to reading from the NNIV smilewinkgrin on-line in just a few days. I'm excited. I am sure that some fine-tuning will be needed. But I am bracing for some hit pieces in the first week of November. Who will be first? Poythress,Grudem,Piper,Mohler,Bayly,Dobson,or L.Ryken? I betcha' Wayne Grudem will be the first one to bash it. Just a hunch.

 

The gender-inclusive issue will be a hard bullet to dodge. A while back Wayne Leman did a study of various versions and their respective inclusive percentages.Some of his findings:

NRSV : 87.7
NLT : 82.1
TNIV : 80.2
NET : 59.0
ISV : 52.4
HCSB : 33.0
ESV : 27.4
NIV : 20.8

Will people be satisfied if the new NIV reduces the inclusive language into the mid-50's range? Personally,I think the TNIV had it about right in that area. I have only disagreed with a few of the renderings.However, with all the mammoth disinformation campaigns that went on in the past and presently, the 2011 edition probably moved the percentages down at least a bit -- hopefully not too far.

 

Why--they probably have already written the first round of bashing, a week before the unveiling.

That's one persistent question that hasn't really been dealt with by the anti-TNIV'ers (ESVO'ers). The NLTse has been ot of range of the radar scope. The translators of the NLTse are conservative Evangelicals as are the TNIV translation team. Some of these translators have worked on both versions. But with all the venom which the anti-TNIV'ers have injected you'd think that the TNIV is a stand-alone Bible translation which uses a fair amount of inclusive language. They ignore the fact that the NLT uses a bit more and that the NET and ISV aren't far behind in that respect.

Even Leland Ryken and his son Phillip used the NLTse as the base text for one of their joint projects. L.Ryken of couse disparaged the uses of functional equivalent versions in his best known book.

Inconsistent? Yep.

If they drop the gender-accurate language I am dropping them. This is one of the best parts of the TNIV. I guess it will be NRSV for me if they back away from a much needed translation element.

Genesis 1:26-27
I think "mankind" (update NIV, Amplified Bible v. 26) is an improvement over "human beings" (TNIV, NLTse, Message, GNT), "humankind" (NRSV), or "humans" (CEV).

I am undecided--at this point--about "mankind" (update NIV, Amplified Bible v. 26) compared to "man" (NIV 1984, HCSB, ESV, KJV, NKJV, NASB, Amplified Bible v. 27, NEB, JB).

Anyone else have any comments on this verse?
