Was the 1769 Oxford KJV ever the standard in America?

    Was the 1769 Oxford edition of the KJV edited by Benjamin Blayney ever accepted as the standard edition in America and ever printed completely word for word and letter for letter in America?

    Which printers or publishers in America printed a KJV edition that was word for word the same as the 1769 Oxford KJV?

    Were there any KJV editions printed in America said to be conformed to the Oxford standard that were printed before the late 1800's?

    The Oxford standard of the KJV adopted by some American publishers in the late 1800's and in the 1900's was not 100% the same Oxford edition as the 1769 edition of Benjamin Blayney.

    I'm not the one to answer your specific questions, but I am going to respond and bump it up--hoping one so it won't float down before one of our more knowledgeable Biblical historians can answer your questions.

    I have always been under the impression that the 1769 Oxford Edition is the one which has been standard among protestant churches for quite some-time in America. . . Any Biblical Historians who can confirm or deny this and give us some history on the Benjamin Blayney edition and how it compares?

    It may be commonly claimed that today's KJV is the 1769 Oxford. The point of my questions was to encourage consideration of whether that claim is correct. Many of today's KJV editions could be said to be based on the 1769 Oxford, but they are not actually word for word the same as the 1769.

    Many will say that a Cambridge edition of the KJV is different from an Oxford edition of the KJV based usually based on 3 to 5 differences. There are many more than 3 to 5 differences between the 1769 Oxford edition of the KJV and today's Oxford KJV editions.

    There may be 20 or more varying editions of the KJV in print today, and I know of none of them that match every word of the 1769 Oxford KJV edition.

    What sort of differences are there between the different KJVs? I'd love to see to compare (and to show that those who are all over the "KJV1611" don't actually use that version - LOL). I didn't realize there were so many variations between the different KJVs.

    There are differences in punctuation, differences in spelling, differences in whether words are singular or plural, differences in whether words are added or omitted, etc.

    There are even differences among editions of the KJV printed by the same printer. For example, Cambridge University Press has at least three [perhaps four] different varying editions of the KJV in print today: the Cambridge Standard Text Edition, the Cambridge Concord edition, and the 2005 Cambridge edition edited by David Norton. In addition, the 1873 Cambridge edition edited by Scrivener is in print today in editions printed by Zondervan and Hendrickson. There are also different Oxford editions of the KJV in print today. The Oxford edition in the Old Scofield Reference Bible [as printed in the 1970's or 1980's] varys from the Oxford edition in the Scofield Study Bible that is said to be the Old Scofield on the book. In another example, I recently checked some KJV editions printed by Thomas Nelson available at a Christian Book Store and found variations in editions that had different copyright dates. Surprisingly, the Thomas Nelson edition [Personal Size Giant Print Reference Edition] with the older copyright of 1976 has more up-to-date spelling of some words than the Thomas Nelson editions with copyrights of 1991 or 2003.

    There are likely many possible reasons.

    One reason would involve the many years of printing by many different printers with many chances for unintentional changes.

    In addition, when the 1611 KJV was first printed, there were no clear spelling rules for all English words. The same word could be spelled in more than one way. After spelling rules developed and after the printing of English dictionaries, some printers attempted to conform the spelling of the KJV to the standard spelling of their day. Later printers did not always know whether a rendering or spelling in the earlier edition of the KJV that they followed was an intentional correction or an unintentional printing error. Different editors and printers have disagreed about whether changes in KJV editions were actual corrections of printing errors and outdated spellings. After the reprinting of the 1611 edition of the KJV in 1833 and again in 1911 or after the printing of Scrivener's research concerning the differences in KJV editions, some printers went back to some 1611 spellings while other printers did not.

    The 1769 Oxford KJV edition still has a character shaped like "f" for long "s" in many words and that remained in Oxford KJV editions until at least 1810. Thus, you have printings that look like "fin" (Ps. 32:5), "fee" (Ps. 34:12), "chafe" (Ps. 35:5), and "wife" (Ps. 36:3).

    All the spelling variations were not corrected by the 1769 Oxford KJV. The 1769 Oxford KJV still has these spellings that are not in most present KJV editions: "houshold" (Gen. 18:19), "foles" (Gen. 32:15), "yern" (Gen. 43:30), "fole" (Gen. 49:11), "waggon" (Num. 7:3), "scull" (Jud. 9:53), "befel" (2 Sam. 19:7), "falshood" (Ps. 144:8), "grashopper" (Ecc. 12:5), "milstones" (Isa. 47:2), "dunghils" (Lam. 4:5), "vallies" (Ezek. 6:3), "waggons" (Ezek. 23:24), "ancles" (Ezek. 47:3), "housholder" (Matt. 13:27), "dunghil" (Luke 14:35), "foretel" (2 Cor. 13:2), "farewel" (2 Cor. 13:11), "injoined" (Heb. 9:20).

    The 1769 Oxford edition of the KJV has "LORD" instead of "Lord" in a good number of verses [likely over 100]. Some examples include Gen. 18:27, 30, 32; Gen. 20:4, Exod. 15:17, Exod. 34:9, Num. 14:17, Josh. 3:11, Josh. 7:8, Jud. 13:8, etc.

    The 1769 Oxford has "Lord" instead of "LORD" at least three places (Gen. 30:30; Jer. 7:4--2 times).

    The 1769 Oxford still has "God" at 2 Samuel 12:22. It was not corrected to "GOD" until after the 1828 Oxford KJV edition.

    Then there are also several places where the 1769 Oxford KJV has differences in words compared to present KJV's [some may have been printing errors].

    For the test verses posted by Logos1560, my Oxford Scofield and World Master Art Edition disagree with the Oxford 1769, except at three verses where they agree.


    My Oxford Scofield and World Master Art Edition agree with the Pure Cambridge Edition, except at two verses where they disagree.

    Thank you for continuing to post your knowledge about the Oxford 1769 KJV. As I tested your posted verses on a couple of my KJV Bibles, I discovered some interesting things about a couple of my favorite Bibles. I hope I did not "hijack" your thread or keep others from posting. If I did, please forgive my many words.

    By the way, it is the second time at the end of the verse where the 1769 Oxford omits "the top of." It is earlier in the same verse where KJV's have "two pillars."

    While the Old Scofield with the 1996 copyright asserts that it does not change any of the notes of the old Scofield Reference Bible, its KJV text is different from the Scofield Reference Bible printed earlier in the 1900's. There are probably 50 differences in the text [mostly spelling of proper names] between the text of the Scofield Reference Bible and the text of the Scofield Study Bible with the 1996 copyright.

    For example, a Scofield Reference Bible printed in the 1980's has "sins" in agreement with the 1769 Oxford edition at 2 Chronicles 33:19 while the Scofield Study Bible has "sin." Another example is at Nahum 3:16, where the Scofield Reference Bible has "fleeth away" in agreement with the 1769 Oxford edition while the Scofield Study Bible has "flieth away."

    At Ezra 4:10, the Scofield Reference Bible has "Asnapper" in agreement with the 1769 Oxford edition while the Scofield Study Bible has "Asnappar." At Ezra 2:2, the Scofield Reference Bible has "Mizpar" in agreement with the 1769 Oxford edition while the Scofield Study Bible has "Mispar."

    Thanks for clearing up the pillars in 2 Chronicles 4:12. When I returned to the verse, I also looked at the NIV and other modern versions. At first, I thought the recessed formatting (poetry format) of the NIV helped the clarity. However, when I read the same verse for the third time in the KJV, I think the Oxford 1769 said it better than the wordy present KJV.

    Or maybe I was finally grasping the thought behind the verse on the third reading. That happens a lot. I think I understand a verse better by switching versions or looking for notes in study Bibles. However, it is probably the rereading of the verse and improved familiarity with the thought behind the verse--more than the time-consuming juggle of versions and study Bibles.

    How many editions were there with the KJB? And just how exactly can you tell which one is which?

    I have a little New Testament that only says that it was printed in Great Britain at the University Press, Cambridge.

    Then another is a full version that it was a Patent from Queen Victoria dated July 11th 1839, and was granted licence from Queen Elizabeth from September 27th 1957 for William Collins and Sons and Company to print one hundred thousand copies in Glasgow.

    Neither copies however state any type of "edition" or year.

    I also have two newer KJ bibles, and they also don't seem to specify themselves as a certain "edition"
    Both are Published by Nelson, one printed in the USA and the other in Belgium.

    A little off topic, but sadly the one made in the USA is not holding up very well at all, and yet it is much newer than the others printed in other countries. They are all holding up very well even though much older.

    I do not know how many different editions that there are of the KJV. Different people would likely give different definitions or have different opinions concerning what constitutes a different edition. Printers in the 1700's and 1800's at least up to the 1880's put the year of publication on the title page. Back when printers had to type-set each letter of each word before printing, it is likely that every printing had some differences from the previous edition. Different sizes sometimes are considered different editions, such as large folio or pulpit sized, medium quarto size, or small octavo size or smaller minature size. It may be possible that a printer prints the same exact text in different size Bibles, but often there may be a few variations in text in the different size Bibles.

    Most of the time printers have not informed readers when they were producing a different edition of the KJV and have not listed or indicated what changes that they were making. For example, the 1769 Oxford edition of the KJV with its many changes does not indicate on its title page or any other introductory page that it was a different edition with a good number of changes from previous editions.

    I have been checking 150 editions of the KJV in over 1,000 places from the 1611 edition to present day editions and have found that very few of them are 100% alike in all the places.

    There are easily over 10 varying editions of the KJV in print today. Cambridge University Press prints at least 3 varying editions of the KJV: its Standard Text Edition, its Concord edition, and the 2005 Cambridge edition edited by David Norton. The 1873 Cambridge edition edited by Scrivener is being printed today in some editions printed by Zondervan and Hendrickson. There is also more than one edition of the KJV printed by Oxford. The present KJV edition printed by the American Bible Society differs from a present Oxford or Cambridge edition. The KJV edition in the Open Bible and in some other study Bibles differs from a present Oxford or Cambridge edition. The 2006 Penguin Classics edition of the KJV which used the text of the 2005 New Cambridge Paragraph Bible has a few differences or changes from the 2005 edition.

    In another post, I will present a few examples of some variations with the editions that have them.
