I went shopping today and as I handed the cashier my pile of coupons, I let her know she could tell me she hated me. The total amount came to $201 after the coupons, before them it was $263.

There are seven of us. What I bought will last for seven days of groceries and about 30 days of non-groceries (shampoo, toothpaste, etc.) Except TP (I think the kids eat it when we're not looking) and milk and those little things you always realize you forgot as you're standing over the stove cooking something you need the forgotten item for!

    How average am I?

How many are in your house and what is the average amount you spend a week? Where do you find the best coupon deals online? Do you know of any places along the same lines of Thunderfap that tell you where to go to sign up or make requests to companies that will then send you coupons? I could always use a new source!

We get the Sunday paper just for the coupons now. It's TOTALLY worth it!

Sounds pretty average to me. We spend about 100 each week and there are 3 of us. We go to Sams or Costco about once a month and spend 200 there but a lot of that stuff goes to school with me.

I figure I'm about $200 a week for our family of 6 so I'd say that you're normal.

Actually, on this topic, I was talking to someone online and she spends $600 a week for her family of 5!!!! Can you imagine? She said she shops sales, uses coupons and doesn't use convenience foods.

But then again, she said that she'll make a stew with 6-10 lbs. of meat, 20 lbs. of potatoes, 5 lbs. carrots and stuff and that will last two days in her family. She also said her children are not overweight. Honestly, I don't believe her because that amount of food even for 5 adults should last WAY more than that. That's 2 meals for 5 people on 10 lbs. of meat and 20 lbs. of potatoes???????? Impossible.

That's insane! Maybe they run a farm or something else with tons of manual labor involved. Then again, maybe she's making it with porterhouse steaks. LOL That might be some really good stew! Even in central Alaska, where you're paying $3-5 for a pepper and around $6 for milk, there were four of us and spent around $215 a week being VERY careful.

Mrs Salty and I spend about 250 dollars at our monthly grocery shopping, and about $ 15-30 for our weekly perishables ( milk, eggs, fruits, ect)

But then again, there is only the two of us

We moved to a smaller town and had to get a PO box. Unfortunately, companies will not honor a PO box for rebates. Also, where I live now it's almost criminal to use coupons. They refuse to take coupons printed off on the computer, saying they are "copies" and if you have a coupon for a free item the store employees are convinced it's counterfeit. Just not worth the hassle anymore, although I do manage a few coupons for toiletries and an occasional grocery coupon, just not nearly the amount I used to have.

By the way, there are 4 of us and we budget about $100 a week for groceries. If I'm frugal and fix lots of beans and cornbread and soups, we can make it on $75.

I've had that issue with printing coupons and just quit doing it because of the cost of ink, but then the one place where I was using them got all picky once when my ink was low and they had to enter them manually. I had done a TON of shopping and just told them to put everything back...THEN they took the coupons but I don't bother to print anymore. Shame, there were a lot of good ones.

I noticed the last "buy one get one free" coupon I got in the mail had security stuff on it and a hologram type thing. Must be a major issue with people cheating or something. What a shame!

We're a little different than you Gina in that all our kids are teens and a couple of extras come in and out depending on the day. So, I plan to feed 7 and then when I only have to feed four I get two meals from that day's menu.

Here lately I've been spending $400 around the beginning of the month and then around $200 a week thereafter. I don't coupon and only use the sales if I am going shopping, which means I'm not going to the store just because they are having a sale! I'm way more likely to overspend/impulse buy if I am in the store than if I just make up a menu and list and buy regardless of any sales.

Realize that is only food! I spend another $200-300 a month on pet food, paper towels/tissue, laundry det and other household supplies. Ten pets, plus 5 teens use a lot of supplies!

However, I don't buy school lunches anymore (used to spend $15 a week PER kid!) because we homeschool so you have add in an extra meal for two kids every day. We probably save money there in the long run though.

I don't know that I save money packing my lunch every day, but I know I eat better than anything they can serve at school! I fix an extra meal every night Sunday through Thursday for me to have the next day.

Sometimes I do that one the weekends too and put it in the freezer for surprise nights when there either isn't enough or we decide to go out. Although, most of the time if we go out, there is still plenty left over for me a lunch.

True MK. Only three of mine are teens.
Though the youngest could out-eat Godzilla if you let her have at it, so maybe it's not so much difference. LOL

School lunches are pretty icky and I don't normally eat them. I've gagged just looking at them before, plus the place is crawling with cockroaches. For the life of me I don't know why people call this a fit place for humans to live in! Anyhow, I pack or my sweet hubby brings me something as he usually comes and spends lunch time with me.

I spend a VERY long time in the store. As in hours. I sit there matching coupons with sales and planning while I'm in the store. Unless it's a staple, I typically won't buy it unless it's on sale AND I have a coupon. Unless I'm in a hurry, then I spend way too much on way too little. When there's time I even organize my coupons according to the layout of the store and start with soap and stuff and move my way up the coldness factor, ending with buying frozen stuff. Plus organizing the cart so the stuff gets packed in order. Maybe just a SLIGHT bit of OCD in there. hehe

I love that there are convenience foods and do buy some stuff that way in case I get sick and others have to cook or if I just don't feel like it on certain days. It's SO tempting to buy a lot of it, but it definitely isn't worth the nutritional loss to do it too much.

We probably spend 75-100 dollars a week on groceries for two adults and two toddlers.

LOL Gina, if this is OCD I suffer from it too! Nothing gets my goat quicker than a cashier that mixes up my groups! I now have a few select cashiers at Walmart who are specially trained in how I like my purchases packed! :D If I'm stuck using someone new, they get on the job training, cause I will tell them DO NOT PACK MY CHEESE WITH THE POTATO CHIPS!

I want things packed so I can take the entire bag to the spot in my house where it will live until it is used.

We are lucky here that we have very nice, very clean school kitchens with ladies who know how to cook. There are a few things they serve that make me wonder, but the kids don't even question it. My own kids HATE sandwiches so that made lunches hard to pack.

I bag my own groceries. I usually end up with about 10 paper bags (doubled in plastic) and about 3 boxes for heavy items and bulky items (ie cereal).

And its very rare that a cashier can beat me. boy am I good.

:D Did you bag groceries as a kid? I was so unhappy as a kid cause the local grocery store wouldn't hire me, a girl, to sack groceries cause they had always hired boys! LOL, that same store, STILL only hires boys to pack groceries! They get away with it cause they have been a fixture in this town since the early 1900's. Still, I can outsack any of their kids and do when I get a chance lol. Of course, since most of them are still teenage boys, I can boss them around fairly easy and in that store, the customer is always right, so they do as they are told!

At our "newly reorganized and remodeled" Walmart stores you can't sack your own groceries. The goods go over the scanner and directly into a sack. All one can do is put their own sacks back into the cart (which I do or my bread would be under my soda  ). So instead, I train the cashiers. :D

Good, I'm not alone! I've toned it down a lot since we moved and Carl hasn't seen how bad I can be about it. LOL So I guess that's a good sign...inside I stew a lot if it's not in the right order, but I don't let it out. It's LOGICAL to put them in order and not have stuff all crazy in your cart and then just tossed together randomly!

My one daughter won't eat at school, but she doesn't pack sandwiches either. She asks me to buy stuff like fresh fruits and veggies, different varieties of nuts, dry veggies, dried cranberries, applesauce, Odwalla bars, almond or peanut butter and a box of triscuits or veggie crackers and it works out for her quite nice!
