I preached on the Reformation this morning and had several say that in their many years they had never heard any one preach on this subject.

Christians are by and large, it seems, illiterate on our heritage.

Shame on pastors who let it be so!

Thank God for what took place in Wittenberg 493 years ago this very day! The world has never been the same since.

When Luther nailed those ninety five theses to the Catholic Church door, little did he know he nailed shut the coffin of paganism, popery and priestcraft!
The movement lingers on but God's people have, by and large, come out.

Thank God for the Five Solas!

This video is a good one to observe on this sacred day.

Astounding isnt it! If you were at one time a RC then this bit of history is very relevant to you. But what about other's who dont come from that background....it's a good reminder that once upon a time, a freedom to practice their own particular faith was negated at the point of death & that not all were allowed access to scriptures

We mentioned Reformation Day in our services with a brief explanatory note. I'm constantly amazed (I shouldn't be...I've been at this for too long) at how uneducated the vast majority of Christians are about Church History.

Bothersome, because we are always prone to repeat the failures of the past when we fail to take mind of them.

I quite agree, so who would you fault about that issue? Just wondering.

Clergy for not taking the lessons of seminary to heart. Denominations for failing to push it through curriculum. You know sheep usually do what the shepherd leads them to do, when we have poorly performing shepherds the sheep aren't going to know the difference.

It takes intentionality to teach Church history in sermons and lessons. (Part of my PhD studies are in history so I am very passionate about the subject.) But even before that it was part of my teaching to try to use illustrations from Church history in teaching. It is hard, but people love it. Sadly, most clergy are woefully ignorant of basic church history.

At this point I think the Protestant evangelical church has completely failed in providing a meaningful, consistent base for educating its people. I mean at some point you gotta realize the horse ain't drinking, but as I've seen it that usually means you've got a bad cowboy.

To add: I'm not at all the model or perfect in this, I can easily pivot towards simple and shallow over complicated and deep. I just wish more people loved Reformation Day :)

Quick story..... Im up in the NW poition of the country....allot of Catholics & my moms family is RC. When she marrys dad, she makes him promice to raise the kids RC. Well years later he finds himself sending his kids to a Catholic school & all we ,,,, meaning I get is Catholic doctrine.

The guy finds himself bringing the kids to school & its Halloween. All the kids are dressed up in costumes for a party & as he is sitting there with me @ 7 years old, he begins to tell me the story of Luther & reformation,,, how this German Monk nails the 49 Feces (that how I heard it) to a Church door etc. And here is my father, a normally quiet man, delivering a passionate story against the Church I go to. I will never forget that. Why, well his great granddad was a Welsh Calvinist Preacher in Pennsylvania who broke his back servicing his community. My mother would have never allowed the old man to teach his kids that....the sun rose & set on RC's to her.

I tell you this because it stuck. My brother today is a Baptist Pastor & I am a Calvinistic Baptist & my wifes family is from Scotland & are original Covenanter's. Without the truth, without the knowledge, without the emphasis we might have stayed where we were. Both my brother & I are today Orthodox Christians not associated with RC nonsense.

    To the contrary

Not downing Luther by anymeans, but take issue with yours quated below.

"When Luther nailed those ninety five theses to the Catholic Church door, little did he know he nailed shut the coffin of paganism, popery and priestcraft!
The movement lingers on but God's people have, by and large, come out."

Did not Paganism continue in the Luthern church, and the others that came out of that mother church?

Did Baptists come from the reformation in your estimation? If so, did they originally observe Christmas, and Easter as holy days?

    What about the Wycliff Bible?

Agree. People fail to realize the Word survived from the last book written by John up until now, and the Word will last forever.

We know the Wyclif translations of His Word existed at least the latter mart of the 13th Century (around the 1390's or before, which means there were Christians before Luther was born in 1483. Luther is not the originator of Christian thinking, but one who saw some light of those outside of his church.

Those that came out the Mother Church brought with them some of what they believed in, in the Catholic church. Those outside of the Catholic church at that time did not observe days, dates or holy days dictated by the Catholic church, and other practices. Today just about all churches have decided the Catholic church is right after all in many areas.

I preached from Isaiah 6 Sunday. So I guess shame on me for preaching from the Word of God and not giving a history lesson. Not that I'm not thankful for the work of the reformation but I certainly didn't feel any obligation to mention it Sunday and still don't.

It really just shows how limiting a preacher is to suggest that there is only the text available to them when expositing. Did you use any illustrations? Did you use idiomatic phrases? Did you preach directly from the Hebrew?

More demonstration of my above point. To suggest the lessons of history cannot be properly inputted into the most basic of sermons is to demonstrate the vapidity of one's discipline.

Just as a note: our sermon series is in the middle of studying Nehemiah. We are walking through the book chapter by chapter. It is foolish to say you can't do this and add practical/helpful illustrations.

My my, aren't we into being insulting today. My feelings are so hurt!!!!

Actually, I do use history and many other aspects of life to illustrate sermons but to feel as if I have failed to do my job because, God forbid, I did not metion that it is Reformation Day doesn't set well with me.

Santa Clause comes to town on December 25. The kids love it, but in my house, on that day, the Christ-mass is not observed. Baptist churches in the 19th Century would not observe that day in their churches. We are far from our roots.
