    The star Spangled Banner

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

The best was saved for last.

So it's saying basically this: "God is on our side, so we can kill, use and reign over other image-bearers when it serves our purpose."

Sounds like Key had a bad case of nationalism. This isn't the first time that God's name and favor have been claimed by a bunch of injustice-mongering people.

God forgive us for making a mockery of your Kingdom.

    If you say so.

I knew you were a far left loon. I just didn't know you hated your country so much.

But then, this being the internet, maybe it's not your country at all. That might explain your animosity .

If that's what floats your boat, go ahead.

But it has less than nothing to do with the lyrics of the 4th verse.

Would be nice if someone would write a decent tune for those words.

    No problem.

    Only what you deserve.

So not only do you hate our country currently, you hate the it all the way back to the War of 1812?

Did I say I hated our country?

I want the best for our country, pray for it consistently, and enjoy being able to worship freely as I feel led. I don't hate the country, but we've still done a lot of crappy things.

Please don't assume so quickly. Someone should really tell you what happens when you assume.

Hate to tell you this, friend...but your response was what caused you to be judged. Suggest you re-read your own post from the viewpoint of others.

Greetings, Don. Thanks for your comment, but my post is showing distaste for the perspective highlighted by those words, which does not imply that our country is entirely bad or always guilty or that most Christians are violence-loving people.

I just don't care for the "God is on our side" mindset, since the U.S. is nothing more than an earthly kingdom, and we cannot more than any other claim that God is on the side of the U.S.

Your words show hate. You called those that were involved with the War of 1812 "injustice-mongering people". That shows hate.

I'm afraid that's just what you want to hear, friend.

It doesn't mean that I hate anyone or that I hate the U.S. I do oppose much of the military action we've undertaken through the years, especially when there was also much injustice going on within our own domain.

So, you see, it's not about hate, it's about having a strong distaste for seeing God's name being claimed for any cause the U.S. supports.

This is what confuses me about your post: The words you despise were written 200 years ago (okay, about 198-199 years, but I was rounding for convenience).

Does the mindset changes between 1812 and 2011 have any bearing on this conversation? Note that I'm in defense of the lyrics that were written then.

Or were you making a correlation about what you believe Carpro's mindset is today?

    Star Spangled Banner

Context is everything to prose & poetry as Location is to real estate.
Here u make a very judgmental statement & personal interpretation about the meaning of a phrase out of context.... & the soul of a man n a particular event an point in time.
(I wouldn't trust ur commentary on any scripture!)
    U should b looking n the mirror... but r u?
U have assumed... & then u blame others?
U accused the author about 'crappy things' which have nothing 2 do w/ that moment n time... & most of which have transpired since his own demise.
    Again......ur interpretation:
God is on the side of justice.... even when things go wrong. If we can't trust God, we sure as hell can't trust man or the god of this world that steers the minds and hearts of this world.
[A note 2 moderators & readers Yes I said hell meaning a place that is real & sure & intended 4 the devil & his angels... & which is enlarged 2 receive those who live amongst us who reject the priestly sacrifice when confronted w/ the cross of Jesus. ... so, n that context.... I wasn't swearing! ....in fact, imo, their might b more going 2 heaven... if we had a little more talk of the reality of hell right here!]
    Back to Jaigner:
Who said "God is on our side"?
Specifically who has implied that... or do u jump 2 conclusions?

Whoever says God is against the righteous... is a liar.... & whoever says God is on the side of the wicked is a liar! .......so, then, both you & I may conclude.... that anyone who justifies his deeds based upon "God being on his side" will one day answer 2 God 4 that statement... & 4 those lead astray by making it... as they will also answer 2 God 4 taking the word of man instead of knowing the word & will of God. [Hence we each inspect ourselves... & repent before God....or one day we answer to Him for every idle word spoken.]
