So much for the GOP leaving health care up to the free market.

"In addition to a Republican effort to repeal the Democrats’ health care law, the party will also move to impose provisions that restrict insurance companies from discriminating against patients with pre-existing conditions and allow young people to stay on their parents’ insurance up to the age of 26, said Majority Leader-designate Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia."

It depends upon how it is done.

If the insurance companies are free to set the rates, co-pays, etc. - it would still be a function of the free market.

I for one like being able to keep my at home adult children on my health plan. I would not mind paying a reasonable upcharge to do so.

It would still be less expensive than having them have to buy individual policies.

When my daughter turned 22 she was offered Hospitalization insurance (only) for a rather high price considering she hardly ever gets sick... Couldn't even consider covering her with a full coverage policy...

The difference is I can buy as part of a group... She can't...

For what its worth there are some good provisions in the bill. Go and read it and you'll see some.

I'm not saying it is a good bill, but it has its moments.

So you don't have a problem with the idea of the government imposing on private companies that they must do this?

There is nothing new about the government imposing standards on private companies. For starters ---

    Food and Drug Administration
    Department of Agriculture
    Interstate Commerce Commission

Why not insurance companies also? Just curious.

And if enough consumers feel the way you do, then insurance companies would cater to that and you could choose an insurance company that had that option. There is no reason for the government to compel all insurance companies to provide that option.

Would you like it if the government told you that you must insure your adult children until they were 26 years old?

Mistakes have been made in the past. Should be continue to make the same mistakes or learn from them?

Would you support doing away with all standards on the development, manufacturer and distribution of drugs, medicines?

Would you support doing away with all standards on the production of foods? This would mean that downer cows could be butchered and the meat from these sick animals would enter our food chain in much greater numbers than is now allowed?

I support doing away with any federal intervention.

I support doing away with any federal intervention.

FYI, we did pretty well butchering downer cows until the ban was put in effect for purely reactionary and emotional reasons in 2003. Prior to 2003 I don't remember us having any major issues with downer cows, do you?

Since insurance is a regulated industry - the government is already telling them what to do. Do you have a problem with that? If not - why not?

As to this particular issue - I have no problem with it if it is simply saying that the insurance companies must offer policies but are not told what to charge or what other conditions such as co-pay or limits may be set.

If a particular insurance company does not want a particular class of customers all they have to do is set the premium so high as to cause those persons to shop else where.

    What is the big deal?

What about drugs? Remember the Thalidomide disaster in Europe that was prevented in the US because of the Food and Drug Admin. blocking it for further testing ... and of course it never came on the market because of the findings and the disaster in Europe.

Remember the problem with milk in China and supplements there were sending around the world? So you want no restrictions on private industry here being able to import anything they want to and sell at their profit and at your risk?

Do you really believe that private industry will put your safety before profits?

Ken, why do you keep posting links to book length stuff that nobody is going to read anyway - instead of just giving a short answer in your own words?

You have a problem with the insurance industry being regulated - I guess.

Would you advocate for the complete elimination of all insurance regulation?

    If not - why not?

If yes - how would anyone know what they are buying or if they are getting the service that they thought that they bought?

Because I am not a politician. I don't deal in sound bites. I don't deal in bumpersticker politics.

If one wants serious policy discussion then one must engage in serious policy reading and study.

So, to satisfy you, here is a short answer in my own words: No, I don't want any government interference in insurance. Open it up to the free market.

Now, if you want to know why this would be better, then you can read the link I provided.

With no regulation of any kind no one would know what they were buying in the free market.

Regulations allow for at least a little apples to apples comparison of insurance policies.

Regulations set up procedures for disputing with your insurance company if they do not deliver.

    Some regulations are good.

    People can read the contract.
We have a procedure. The judicial system.

Prepaid medical service is NOT "INSURANCE!" There is no free market in insurance or in prepaid medical service.

In Washington State all insurance companies must be approved by the Insurance Commissioner. There is some kind of insurance pool which all companies contribute. If a company fails the policy holders are protected and I like that just fine. When the stock market was intentionally crashed and half of you lost 30% of your savings (I lost about 15%) people who had their money in a genuine insurance product at least in Washington State didn't lose anything - the trade off being a lower return on one's investment. (Yes, I know what I'm talking about. Took a required course in insurance principles at Clarkson University nee College and had a license to sell life insurance in Washington. No, the only insurance I now have is home owners and car insurance)
