Should be an interesting matchup, for several reasons:
    • This year throws out the "defense win championships" concept that has usually been the case. Basketball-like numbers could show up (Of course, now that I've said that, watch the final score be 7-6...nah!).
    • Two electrifying QB's: It may very well be a Heisman vs. Runner-up matchup.
    • Exactly how hideous will Oregon's outfits be?
    • Conventional wisdom seems to say the last team with the ball will win (I disagree).
My early thoughts (not that anyone cares that much ( :D :D )--Auburn will take down Oregon pretty handily. Don't think Oregon's seen anyone the like's of Auburn. And an SEC mid-pack defense is so much better than a Pac-10 mid-pack D. And I'm more impressed with Auburn's range of offensive weapons. I won't be surprised if Auburn wins by 17-20 points.

Oh...in other sports headlines...the most unnecessary line I've seen in print in a long time:

Huge Brawl before USC-UCLA; 2 Stabbed: (wait for it....) "It's unclear what started the brawl, but police said drinking was a major factor."

    Duh. Ya think??

Will be an exciting game for sure, I'm thinking Auburn will win - "WAR EAGLE" (from a Vol fan).

That's in the general vicinity of what I was thinking, too. I see no way Oregon stays with AU.

Thomas won't be a heisman runner up. Were you referring to LaMichael James?

This SHOULD be a fun game. Sometimes (in the past) we get a game like this and it ends up being a boring (I would still say exciting) game.

The winning Heisman candidate has some rough luck in these games (tebow lost his bowl game, so did bradford) so it'll be interesting to see if that trend continues.

The Pac 10 as a conference is pretty bad. SEC (while not as good as may be hyped) is significantly better. While Oregon did rough up the one really good team they played, they didn't see good teams on a weekly basis.

I like Auburn in a close game, as of right now.

The thing that has impressed me with Auburn is that they are significantly better every week.

This team barely resembles the team the beat Miss. St. by 3.

I think Auburn's ability to grind it out or go quick-strike will help them tremendously.

Also, I think Oregon's defense is comparable to teams Auburn has played. I doubt that Oregon, however, has played against a defense with the speed of Auburn's.

Oregon is a 2nd half team. Their focus is high octane offense and changing things up in the 2nd half.

Stanford has a pretty decent defense, but hadn't really adjusted early on in the season.

I got to see Oregon play in person this year, and man they are fast. I also got to see Auburn play in person this year and they are fast. But those speeds just don't seem to look the same.

While Oregon didn't play near the body of work, they really didn't struggle with anyone outside of Cal. They beat up pretty bad on some bowl eligible teams (although that may be a bad standard comparison). Auburn on the other hand tends to play close in those situations, but they win.

I will say this: Oregon has spotted some good teams points early on in games and been just fine. I would be very surprised if they got down 14+ to Auburn and made it up.

I'm an SEC man, but I don't see Auburn blowing Oregon away.

And Auburn's defense is that front four (or basically just Fairley). Their secondary is awful.

I agree pretty much. I don't think their linebackers are terrible--just average.

    Secondary is pretty bad, though.

Their saving grace: The pass rush is good enough that the defenders haven't had to defend for too much time. Fairley and co. have bailed them out more than once.

If Auburn's pass rush doesn't materialize, these guys will get shredded in the secondary.

    Just MHO.

Pulling for Oregon but Auburn will probly win it. Andrew Luck should take Heisman tho.

How could anyone but Cameron Newton get the Heisman? I cannot think of a player who was more important to his team's success in the last decade.

Or do you feel that way because of the allegations against his father?

(I'm just surprised--I haven't encountered many folks that have vouched for anyone to receive the Heisman other than Newton. The ones that have usually felt so because of the scandal that has surrounded Newton's father's actions.)

I guess that is why they pick four finalist and then vote.

SEC Teams run right at you (for the most part). Oregon's offense is something that Auburn really hasn't seen. Not on a regular basis anyways. Oregon's run game will keep Auburn guessing some.

I still like Auburn in a close game.

John, why do you favor Andrew Luck over Newton? Interested to hear your take.

A lot of sportswriters boycotting newton.

Not sure if this is good for Luck or not, depending on how they vote.

Could mean a lot of split votes and Newton still winning.

Auburn isn't really a 3 yd and a clump of sod offense. They have guys all over the place. The way it sounds, no one in the SEC uses motion or the spread.

I disagree with the Auburn defense. It has some holes, but it won't be overwhelmed. Oregon has a lot of depth and they just keep running their offense regardless of the circumstances.

Oregon spreads the ball around more than any team Auburn has played thus far.

SEC offenses this year took a step back, IMO, and reflect more of what they did 3-4 years ago.

I still think Auburn is the better team...but I'm not high on their defense at all.

I think Oregon better hope that Newton wins the Heisman.

If Newton does not, that Auburn squad would come into the game with a chip on its shoulder the size of Brett Favre's ego. Auburn's coaches are still getting mileage out of Auburn's undefeated season in which they were "cheated" out of a chance to play for the Title (hey--a good coach finds a point of motivation and goes with it: go right ahead, I say!).

If Newton and AU's offense felt they had something to prove due to a perceived or real sleight--I think Auburn would "whup up" on Oregon pretty good at that point.
