GOP gets queasy over earmark ban

    After agreeing to kill earmarks, some of the most conservative GOP lawmakers are already starting to ask themselves: What have we done?
    Indeed, many Republicans are now worried that the bridges in their districts won’t be fixed, the tariff relief to the local chemical company isn’t coming and the water systems might not be built without a little direction from Congress.

    So some Republicans are discussing exemptions to the earmark ban, allowing transportation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and water projects. While transportation earmarks are probably the most notorious — think “Bridge to Nowhere” — there is talk about tweaking the very definition of “earmark.”

    Banning Earmarks is one of the best ideas to come down the pike.

    At one time if was used, but not too excess...

    Then obama came along and used it to bribe his bills through...

    Earmarks should be prohibited. If you want a spending bill to go through than put it in the necessary committee process.

    We also need term limits, lobbyist rules, and a balanced budget requirement...but I think we all know this is all a big old dream.

    The whole system is broken. Voting, while a responsible thing to do, doesn't change anything. We need wholesale change in the Washington system.

    Been around a whole lot longer than our current President. Republicans are just as guilty as the other guys.

    They're cowards.

    Not having earmarks doesn't mean they can't get the money. It means they have to get it in the light of day through the normal legislative process.

    I would say the following remarks of Representative Flake are spot on:

    "The contemporary practice of earmarking, as we have seen it over the past several years under Republicans and under Democrats, has been a way to hide spending for individual Members' benefits. It has led to corruption, it has led to scandal and will continue to do so until we end it."
