How is debate on biblical issues supposed to work?

    The Bible is God's Word, then the Bible is true.

    If the Bible is true, then all verses should come together and make sense where everyone should believe the Word. I also believe the the words of Jesus have more authority than the words of the desciples.

    However, the debates I've seen indicate that people here don't believe the whole Bible. Well, the argument methods seem to indicate that is true.

    If person A shows scripture that makes statements and person B disagrees, then should not person B first show why person A's scripture is incomplete? Person B can't show why the scripture is wrong, as we all know that the Bible is true - so obviously the scripture is being viewed incorrectly or incompletely.

    If person B does not first do that, then the discussion is going to just run in circles.

    When that happens, as I have seen here, the insults start.

    Just my two cents.........

    That's how things SHOULD work but not necessarily how they DO work. It is not easy to admit you are wrong and harder still to accept the reality that something you may have believed for a long time and is foundational to your life and decision making may actually have been wrong all the time and affected you adversely. That's just plain scary to be honest. And I expect a person to fight me on what they believe and they should expect the same in return from me. If you can let your long held beliefs go with a simple sigh and "Oh well..." then you couldn't have really treasured those beliefs much or relied on them! The problem is not disagreeing, it's how we disagree. I believe it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Are you looking for the truth or are you just looking for a fight? Are you willing to test your thoughts and beliefs against the thoughts and beliefs of others?

    Yes. What amazes me is how someone waxes eloquent in private or a public rebuke pointing the finger and being on a high horse, but when said person is shown they did err in the same way and committed the same crime...*poof* they disappear and get all quiet. That's a really weak brand of Christianity in my book. :smilewinkgrin:

    Lol, that is true. I'm sure a strong Christian such as yourself would agree that it is almost as amazing as a person who constantly scours a Christian website with the purpose of entering debates not to learn but to win by any and every means necessary. But you and I also both know that a truly wise person would never succumb to such blatant provocation nor lower themselves to the childish machinations of such an insecure individual:thumbs:

    Since my acceptance of Jesus, a mere fifteen months ago, I have sought out truth - or at least, I think I have.

    I was filled with "do's" and "don't do's" as a child, being dragged to a church where the "don't do's" reigned supreme.

    I have learned that much of that was a personal interpretation of something that was not really in scripture. I know that I can still have ideas that are not valid. If I cite a scripture that I have found, and it tells me that some thing is true - and someone disagrees - it serves me better to tell me why the scripture I found is wrong BEFORE showing me other scripture and attempting to interpret it for me.

    If all scripture is true - and the error of understanding is mine - first show me why my verse is not saying what I think it does. To do otherwise leaves only questions for me. To me, it also nullifies your argument. If my scripture is allowed to stand by your ignoring it, no useful information is being given to me.

    Some folks here do a great job is explaining. To them, I say thank you and may God bless your day.
