The book Radical by David Platt

Hi, John.

I haven't read the book, but if that's what it is advocating, I'd be against it. The last thing we need in Asia are "missionaries" here on a guilt trip without a call!

I haven't read the book, but I have heard David Platt speak at our church.
He was incredible to listen to, he didn't try and lay a guilt trip on anyone, just presented the facts that somethings are not optional in life. Like taking up your cross.

I usually don't trust reviews on-line, because a great majority of people will only review a book when:
a. they really loved it
b. they really hated it.

 

Read the book, it is excellent! No guilt trip, just Biblical truth.

 

Having spoken with David personally on several occasions, heard him, and the like...I don't buy the "guilt trip" angle mentioned in the OP at all.

He's quite solid theologically, and as I've said, I don't see the guilt thing at all from him.

Radical

I have read the book, and David makes a very good point in that much of American Christianity has made Jesus fit into our value system, while His goals are very different.
We are all called to be fishing for men. Our job is to support Christ's mission, not build temporal structures that in eternity will have no value.
I do think that David does step on Grace when he says, "if our lives do not reflect radical compassion for the poor, there is reason to wonder if Christ is really in us at all." (pg 111). This is look at works for assurance, instead of Christ.

 

Am I to assume that you did not read the book and want to discuss it?

I think Platt causes people to ponder how they live rather than living according to their greeds but their needs and giving the rest away.

 

The OP could not be more wrong! Get the book and read it for yourself.
