We are going through Eph on Wed Night at our church. Here are a few of my notes.

    Paul and the Ephesians
A handbook for the Kingdom/ Church

Purpose: A handbook for the Kingdom/ Church

Section 1: A praise to our great God & King (1:3-14)
Section 2: A prayer to our great God and King (1:15-23)

Section 3: The Plan of our great God and King (2: 1-22)
or..... The Citizenship of the Kingdom

    PLAN = Plan of salvation.

    Body of the letter ...(2:1-6:20)

The body focuses on the contrast between the righteous kingdom of God and the sinful kingdom of demons and fallen humanity.
    KEY Verse(s) for Chapter 2...
12remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

    The text..
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

1 The way we were. (1-3)

A)We all come from the Kingdom of Darkness

1a) Paul tells what citizenship in that kingdom is like..
verse 1...we are not well or sick, but dead.
Some people when they have been wronged by someone say...”You are dead to me”. Meaning, they will have nothing to do with that person.

Jonathan Edwards calls this “walking corpses”

Martin Luther calls this the “bondage of the will.”

    LOOK AT BONDAGE:
Notice the word “follow” in verse 2. OR.....we gravitate to.

Notice the word “Prince” and “world” also in verse 2. ..... Ruler,
We follow after the prince of the dark kingdom. He RULES us.
2Cor 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Notice the word “passion” , “flesh”, and “desires”. in verse 3

Notice the word “disobedience” in verse 2

    B) Those in the Kingdom of Darkness remain under God's wrath

    Application:

We DO what we LOVE. We were bound by our passion...flesh.... desires

We need to see that we SIN because we LOVE to sin. An adulterous is an adulterous because his love for that sin is greater than his love for God that tells him not to sin.

We need to remember what sin is. “Sin is a path away from God”

4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

    1 But God (vs4)

A powerful turn of events. God changes things.
    Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Also our key verses..12-13 vs 13...."But now in Christ Jesus"

    A) Who is this God?

1a) God is sovereign ...chap 1

    2a) God is Holy...chap 2

    3a) God has a full wrath to Sin...chap 2

    B) What has God done?

1b) We were dead to God, but God made us alive (vs 5)
Like Lazarus in John 11...”Come forth”.

2b) We were enslaved to sin, but God seated us with him in the heavenly places.

3b) We were under God's wrath, but God now immeasurable riches of his grace.

    C) Why did God do it?

    1 Love vs 4
    2 Mercy vs 4
    3 Grace vs 5
    4 Kindness vs 7

    D) After salvation by grace, what do we do?

WALK in good works vs 10
    OBEY...vs 2
    COVENANT....verse 12
