Does anyone have thoughts on Sheffield???

 

For post-graduate...here are some which are outside of the Oxford system...

Aberdeen for starters. Edinburgh, Cambridge are also excellent.

One that you might seriously consider is St Andrews.

Just a sampling. There are others. If you can get into the Oxford system I'd highly recommend it.

 

Do you mean the University of Sheffield biblicalk studies department http://www.shef.ac.uk/bibs/prospectivepg, or Cliff College http://www.cliffcollege.ac.uk/ or something else? The University certainly doesn't seem to be evangelical in its outlook. Here is some of what its site says:

Biblical Studies and the history of religion


Through critical interaction with the biblical and related texts, major historical issues are discussed. For example:

• What if the historical Jesus was not, as many scholars now stress, the 'founder of Christianity'?
• Who was the historical Jesus?
• Why do we get the origins of both Judaism and Christianity based on, and partly found through, biblical texts?
• Which people were responsible for collecting these texts and providing seemingly definitive collections?
• Why are there different collections?
• Why were so many texts not included?

The biblical texts have provided the basis for almost anything of major cultural significance, from legal systems to three world religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). The history of reception has been long and turbulent, with the Bible used for good and ill.

Cliff College is a Methodist institution, and seems to be broadly evangelical, but as with the University, there doesn't seem to be any statement of faith - at least I couldn't find one on their site.

WEST, the college I mentioned, has a doctrinal basis on its site.

Personally, I would want to know an institution's doctrinal basis before embarking on a course.

I quite agree with you that WEST is probably the best place to go. Any of the mainstream universities- Oxford, Cambridge, etc.- will be liberal in their theology. The only other ones that someone might think about are:-

Oak Hill. This is Anglican, but strongly evangelical, and a lot of Free Church folk go there.

Moorlands. This used to be a bit charismatic, but is now supposed to be much better.

Both of these offer M.A. degrees, but not Phds. The other good ones are non-accredited.

That would be Devon, Squire. I live in a village called Woodbury and worship at Scott Drive Church in Exmouth, near Exeter.

I am about 30 miles away from Paignton, where David lives. He kindly (and rashly!) invites me to preach at his church from time to time.
