The pastor and I were talking about our weight - too much of it. We came up with an ideal. Between the two of us, we would like to loose a total of 50 pounds - 20 for me and 30 for the pastor.

Our ideal was to have church members commit to putting a certain amount of $ into missions for each pound we loose up until April ( this would be for Annie Armstrong Home missions)

Each person/family would decide what they would want to pledge.
We would not ask for nor accept any info on the pledges. That would be between them and the Lord.

We would weigh in each Sunday AM B4 church and announce the weekly/cumulative results.

So what do you think - any additional ideals?

Not sure equating gimmicks (biggest loser, lottery, eat dinner on the roof, swallow a goldfish) with money for such a serious cause as missions would be up to me.

But I've been around all the fun-and-games and have come down on giving for the sake of glorifying God and not a contest or game. Took me 60+ years, so don't force my warped thinking on others

If you do it, I have a great diet (www.phr.net) that I lost 55 pounds on since Sept 27 that is healthy for you.

I agree. I could, however, see such a thing as helpful for raising funds for a social charity.

You could always title it "we're reducing staff for missions!"

That way, no matter how anyone feels about you, they can be for it. :D :D :D

I think such things fall in line with ponzy schemes. Can you imagine the Lord pulling something like this to get people to give? I cannot! What needs to happen is that you both lose the weight because you know you need to and the people need to be taught to give from a cheerful heart, not because of some scheme which dishonors the Lord.
