I think that William Tyndale's New Tesament translation was a fine production. The KJV which leaned heavily on it, made a number of improvements -- but for the most part the revisers should have left well enough alone. Tyndale alone had more talent in composing clear English than the KJV team put together.

I am not the only voice saying that the Tyndale version actually reads in a more contemporary fashion. It does so a surprising number of times in contrast to the 1611. Logos would concur.

The King James will be at the top,and the Tyndale translaion will be below in my snips.

    Mark

    Chapter 1
    v.12
    the spirit driveth him
    the spirit drove him

    15
    The time is fulfilled
    The time is come

    22
they were astonished at his doctrine
    they marvelled at his teaching

    35
in the morning, rising up a great while before day
in the morning very early,Jesus arose

    Chapter 2
    v.1
    after some days
    After a few days

    18
    come and say unto him
    came and said unto him

    Chapter 3
    v.3
    Stand forth
    Arise,and stand in the midst
    [Lit.:arise into the midst]

    Chapter 4
    v.5
it had no depth of soil
    it had no rooting

    35
    he saith unto them
    he said unto them

    37
he was in the hinder part of the ship
    he was in the stern

    Chapter 5

KJV at the top and the Tyndale translation at the bottom in these snips.

    v.15
    come to Jesus,and see him
came to Jesus, and saw him

    16
    how it befell him
how it had happened unto him

    22
there cometh ... Jairus by name
there came ... whose name was jairus

    28
    For she said
    For she thought
[Certainly "thought" is correct --not 'said'.]

    38
    he cometh ...see
    he came ... saw

    Rippon...

    Thanks for the comparisons.

I like the delivery of the KJB when read aloud.

Tyndale is good, but when read aloud, lacks the rhythm and cadence of the KJB. And, in my opinion, this is a major contribution of the committee, a sounding board that Tyndale did not have available in his seclusion.

I have no idea where Rippon is coming up with his "Tyndale", but here are Tyndale's actual words, copied directly from the 1526 octavo:

    v.12
    the sprete drave hym

    v. 15
    the tyme ys ful come

    v. 22
    they mervelled att hys learninge

I think the KJV is important as a translation, but so are other translations. I mean if you doesn't personally like or use the KJV I don't see how someone else using it should affect you.

I took the snips directly from Wordsworth Classics Of World Literature. The introduction is by Priscilla Martin (St Edmund Hall,Oxford).

    Note On The Text

The text printed here is based on the edition of 1534,as reproduced in the Cambridge University Press edition of 1938. Spelling and punctuation have been modernized, but archaic verb forms ('giveth','receiveth',and so on) have for the most part been retained,in order to preserve the rhythms of Tyndale's sentences.

As I told B4L --read the OP. The OP of any thread should inform viewers of the purpose of the said thread.

You have been posted on this forum for 6 years (which is before I came aboard) and still don't know that the purpose of this forum? This is a place to compare Bible versions. Duh!

But we don't need countless posts by you showing the differences. What's next? You going to print the entire Bibles verse by verse? C'mon Rippon. Enough already. Some people just like to see their post count go up apparently.

I'll say this again. Why,if you are not interested in a thread do you post? If I am uninterested in a given thread I simply don't post.

The point of ths forum is to compare versions. That's what I'm doing. Why don't you open a thread on the Bible Versions/Translations forum on the price of tea in China?

Small wonder that you are finding some "clearer" and "more contemporary" language when you are copying from a modernized version of Tyndale.
