Sears had a sale on eye glasses, $100 ea including bifocals. I asked what they would cost if I used my old frames . . . $250 each.

Nothing that good is ever true when it comes to eyeglasses. Hubby and I went to place after place when they had specials on either lenses or frames. No matter where we went, the cost averaged out around the same. They either wouldn't allow you to get the lenses without buying their frames or you couldn't get the frames without buying the lenses.
Some either just said it was in the small print, others made the excuse that they could only make lenses to fit the frames they sold or who they sent it out to would only do that.
Whatever the case, you're not going to be getting a whole pair of glasses in any way, shape, or form for what they make the cost sound like.

I did go to a national chain store (not anything like Sears) and bought 2 pairs for $100. Within one month one of the lens fell out and in another month or two, a bow on the other pair broke off.

Well, you get what you pay for

Willing to say which one? For the most part I refuse to go to Wal-Mart, so if that's the one, I never checked it out.
But all the ones we received ads for or saw on television or that had signs...we stopped at tons of different places for the advertised special and it wasn't true.

In fact, the one place flat out refused to sell us the frames they had on sale because we weren't buying lenses. If I had the time and energy to bother, I'd have reported them for false advertising for flat out refusing to let us buy the frames at the advertised price, which at that place said NOTHING about having to buy lenses. They just said they wouldn't do it unless we bought lenses there too.

I got my last 2 pairs for $99 at Sears and it ended up costing about $300. Getting one of them made into sunglasses added $100 and then there was for all intents and purposes no warranty on them. They also took several weeks to arrive. I felt like I'd been had.

I'd gotten much better deals at Walmart in the past and they did hold up very well. They also arrived in just a few days. I really liked my last ones and would still be wearing them if I could still see out of them effectively ;) They were also extremely helpful when I lost a pair.

I am seriously thinking about going with an online dealer next time.

That does sound like a crazy price for getting them made into sunglasses. I've had it done for $20 before.
My daughter with the eye problems has the lenses that change in the sun and the extra cost for those lenses was lower than $100.
We ended up buying her contacts and lenses (she wears both at the same time) and hubby's glasses on a military base and that made it a little less than elsewhere, but not by much. We do look elsewhere for the other kids since other places have much more selection and great warranties on ones for kids.

I'm really sorry to hear Sears would do that though. A family member worked there basically her whole life (talking decades here) and I've always had a high opinion of them.

This thread came through headed by an ad for on line eye glasses. The program which adds the ads picked up on the thread title?

Yes. That's why you see many of us replacing letters in certain words with a * symbol. It keeps people who can see the ads from getting foul advertisements showing.

My last two pair were in excess of $700.

You can get the ultra-cheap, plastic-frame stuff pretty cheap, but add in prism, no-line bi-focal, transitions, plastic lenses, and decent frames and the cost goes up and up and up. Fortuately, I have good eye coverage.

I get my glasses online. I haven't paid more than 70 dollars. I'm talking about progressive lenses in rimless frames. There is a learning curve to be able to do this but I've saved hundreds of dollars per pair. My fave site is www.zennioptical.com. The quality compares to store brought glasses. There are other sites as well.

That's just normal pricing at that website. You can get single vision glasses for less than 20 dollars on that website.

Anybody that is interested in saving money on eyeglasses by buying them online should start here:

    http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com/2007/10/online-eyeglasses-how-it-works.html

I've bought six sets of glasses for myself and at least four sets for my wife online. I'd say we've spent less than $400 on 10 sets of glasses over the years. I'm willing to help, so if anyone has questions, ask away.

My last pair, a number of years ago (maybe 6 or so??) were in the $expensive ball park due to my astigmatisms etc. But,,,,,, I wear my contacts mostly and only use the glasses when I gotta. My contacts were about 250, but I am special needs.
