I thought this would be an interesting question to post.

I would. We would just have to be tolerant. There's so much more to life than politics. If I married a Republican woman one day, we could have our own political views and still love each other. Our children would be exposed to both of our political viewpoints and one day grow up to have their own political views.

I'm not married and I don't have a girlfriend at this time. However, I've never found politics to be an obstacle in dealing with other people. Most of my family are Republicans and some of my best friends are Republicans.

IMHO, marriage is hard enough as it is. You may think it may not be a problem - but things could arise as time goes on.

For example, You support Mr. Jones for Governer, and your wife supports Mrs. Smith. Whose sign goes up in the yard. Whose bumper sticker goes on the family car. If finances are a bit tight, would there be a problem giving a financial gift to one or both of the candidates - If there are major differences in the candidates (say abortion or increase in welfare ) could those discussion lead to arguments?

Suppose a young couple came to you and wanted advice about marriage. She is Catholic, he is Independent Fundamental Baptist. Would you advise "just have to be tolerant. There's so much more to life than religion". Then they say "Our children would be exposed to both of our religious viewpoints and one day grow up to have their own religious views.

This could be said about any issue. Even simple things like do you have 3 meals on Sat or just Brunch and an early dinner?
Me, I need at least 3 hots a day.....

Yes, when a young couple are in love - they don't think everything Thu. Thats why an engagement should be at lest one year - gives them time to learn about each other.
Whose family will you spend the holiday's with, Do you have just cell phones, land line or both... Cable or just over-the-air, Which grocery store to shop at and the list goes on and one

This is an excellent question. My answer is yes. If politics are in proper perspective and not allowed to become of exaggerated importance, it wouldn't matter.

As a matter of fact, my wife and I differ politically, not to a great degree, but there is a difference, and I think that is healthy for living, moving human beings who are constantly growing as individuals as well as a couple.

It is a good point to say that differences can be a challenge, but in reality, most of us don't put signs in our yards or bumper stickers on our cars or make financial contributions to candidates.

That could, of course, become an issue in itself, too, I guess.

People who don't agree with me politically are wrong. I consider liberals ill-informed, and dangerous. Their viewpoints are so obviously flawed, to me, that I think they cannot see.

Christians who hold a liberal worldly view have to be the most undiscipled among us. Their liberalism isn't like atheist liberalism, where their eyes haven't been opened. Christian liberals are either unschooled in scripture or rebellious to it.

I could never marry someone I don't respect.

This is one of the most horrific and divisive things I have read on BB.

I generally lean to the right, but have many faithful Christian friends and family who serve and walk with Christ who disagree. It doesn't make them wrong - it makes them human. They have their own convictions about the issues, but most of it is perspective.

The idea that you can't be a Democrat and be a Christian is very disturbing.

That's different. I think religious unity in a marriage is very important.

Good. I thought of you when I was writing it. It is my honest opinion. I thought saying what I feel instead of what will make people feel warm & fuzzy used to be a good trait.

Perhaps you feel Christ taught us that you can stop bread from rising by adding flour.

Speaking of Christ, he was pretty divisive hisself.

"Divisive" is a word unstudied Christians like to throw around, because the doctrine of seperation offends their politically correct worldview. Best ignore it, and deride those who don't agree.

Praise God for good conservative Christian women.

I didn't say Democrat or Republican. I said liberal.

That is another trait I don't respect. Putting words in my mouth I didn't say is not very Christian, and it is a horrible debate tactic.

Sheesh. I'm glad I'm not like you. I respect many people of differing political views.

Bro. Curtis, do you think I'm going to hell because I'm liberal?

Three key words/phrases "IF"; "in proper perspective; "not to a great degree"

One major issue Mrs Salty and I disagree on is the death penalty. She says we do not have the right to take someones life (that is 100+% pro life) Though I disagree with her, I can respect that belief. Now, I can not will not respect someone who believes in abortion. Robert R. McMillan, who ran for US Senate from NY in 1988 said that if you don't respect unborn life, how can you respect anything else.

I am very involved in politics - ( I am currently the Chairman for the Town of Sullivan Conservative Party. Mrs Salty is registered as "Non-enrolled" as she does not want to be politically active. though I wish she would be more involved - I can live with it.
    Just depends on the issues.

I'm just not sure that I could do that. Some things we could probably tolerate in each other.

But someone who would have opposite political views than myself would:
    • be pro-abortion
    • support homosexual marriage
I may have friendly acquaintances and co-workers that believe those things, but I don't think that I could be one-flesh with a man who supported those things.

    LOL...that hilarious.

I'm so very sorry. I hereby change my statement to say "liberal." It's equally horrific. Being irrational is also a poor debate tactic.

It is a good trait. I don't have any problem with that trait. It's your opinion itself that is disturbing.

You can't ignore and deride at the same time. I don't know if deriding is a very good debate tactic, either.

"Unstudied" Christians? You talking about me? There are many who are far superior than I, but I am trained in Bible and Theology.

I don't hold politics in very high regard. They are a necessary evil. Me and my wife are both registered republicans though and vote that way. So we don't have to worry about this.

Liberals won't care for you or your opinions. I consider that a good thing.

Like you, I don't see how one can be a political liberal and a Christian at the same time. Liberals embrace the worldviews Christ clearly tells us to reject.

To answer the original question posed - NO

I don't think I can add anything else, as my views are fairly similar to that of Carpo and Bro. Curtis, so I'll just throw some popcorn in the microwave, wait for billwald to meander along, and check back, this thread should be a good one.

Doesn't the average married couple have enough to disagree about without intentionally adding something like politics into the mix?

This is a very small-minded and stagnant view. Check out the political views of Christians around the world and see how the important issues are interpreted.

My guess is that a lot of my political leanings would be the same as yours, but I'm not going to question the validity or salvation of Christians who differ.

And for Christians, politics should be kept in proper perspective. It's not as important as we make it out to be.
