Hello all, this is my first post to these here message boards. My son bought me one of these crazy machines with the keyboard and the mouse for my birthday back in April and I have been getting pretty good and the internets and the clicking and what not.

So anyways, onto my main point. My grandson is fourteen years old and his birthday is coming up in a month and he told me he wants me to buy him Dungeons and Dragons books so that he can play this game with his friends.

Now to be honest I'm really torn up about this and I need some advice. I have been praying to the Lord and I think he is telling me to seek out the advice of those perhaps more wise and knowledgeable than me.

I have heard many terrible things about this game, that it teaches the youngins to worship satan and perform rituals and what not. And I am worried about the safety of my grandson. If I recall correctly, I remember some fella dying in the sewers somewheres years ago because he was trying to act out the Dungeons and Dragons like it was his real life.

Now on the other hand, my grandson gives me an entirely different argument. He's telling me that yes, there are options in this game to be bad, evil, etc. But that the most important thing to take note of is that it is a choice. He tells me that him and his little fellas that he's friends with get to choose if they are good or evil, and when they play they choose to be good heroes or whatever, saving innocents and fighting bad guys or what not.

I am still very concerned about this Dungeons and Dragons, because even if thats the way he says he's gonna play it, the temptation is still there to turn towards the other side and be negatively influenced by Satan.

I need help! My grandson is a good kid. He prays to the Lord daily and generally treats everyone the way God would want him to. Am I overreacting in thinking I need to prevent him and his little friends from playing this Dungeons and Dragons? Please provide me with some advice!

Thank you for your time and patience in reading this.

Who plays D&D still? Maybe he's talking about World of Warcraft?

Honestly, is he really into D&D? I played it and found it to be fun but if I was a kido again I'd be all over World of Warcraft. Which is a fun game!

If playing a role playing game is the only thing you have to worry about concerning your grandson then you are doing pretty well. Discernment is the key to this and other games that are out there. A very few nut cases lose touch with reality when playing Dungeons and Dragons. But, I think they would have lost touch with some other medium. The vast majority who have played simply enjoyed doing so with others in the context of friendship and camaraderie. I've never played but had many friends who did. They didn't worship satan, perform weird rituals, nor sacrifice the neighbor's cat on the bbq grill. They have grown up to be very productive citizens, good parents, and many are active in a local church.

No, he definitely called it Dungeons and Dragons, which I am assuming is the same as D&D. What is World of Warcraft? Is that like a newer version of Dungeons and Dragons?

Wait you're telling me that people play this game and torture animals? How are these books still in print? Shouldn't they be banned or something?

WOW is an online interactive game. My son has been playing it for years (he's 25). I don't think there are any dangers involved in it other than spending too much time on the computer :).

If it makes you uncomfortable to buy D & D for him, then get him something else and explain your feelings to him.

Some people probably just view d&d as a game. Others probably take it too far. I don't really know anything about the game really. I do know its probably not something I'd want my kid to play.

It's called "tongue and cheek." D&D got a bad name from the actions of just few nut cases. The vast majority don't confuse reality with a role playing game. If you are so concerned about then why not buy it without your grandson's knowledge, investigate it for yourself, and then make an informed decision. Don't base it on hearsay.

    Two points:
    1. You have doubts about buying your grandson these books. If in doubt, DON'T. Better to avoid than regret.

    2.
It is not always good to have a choice, especially when still a child. It sounds like you don't want to be the one to expose him to something spiritually harmful. Perhaps he can choose to be good or evil, but why allow the possibility to be tempted?

Question for you. Has he been told no by his folks? Every kid knows that if one parent says no, ask the other. If they both say no, ask the grandparents.

Good day to you and may He grant wisdom.

I think you should tell him this game bothers your conscience toward God. Tell him you would be glad to purchase him another game that is not offensive (good luck finding that) to your faith.

I don't think any young man would be hurt by this. Oh sure, for a few minutes, maybe a day or so he might be angry. But I think in the end he will have great respect for you standing up for your convictions. Children want to believe their parents and grandparents are people of conviction and principle.

And if your grandson is not a Christian, this might be a great time to share the gospel with him.

Here is a link that explains how it works and what really happens and answers the question you asked. I would add this. You made this statement; "Now to be honest I'm really torn up" Go with your first impression on this. Don't violate your concience. The game is not a necessity. it offers nothing to the Christian and could possibly be harmful to some.

Anyone going to Jack Chick for insight is asking a blind man to describe what they're wearing.

That said, D&D gets a bad rap because of junk from the 1980s. As part of a generation raised with these games around, and participating in some of them, its not a terrible game. Honestly I wouldnt have a problem with our kids playing them.

Most of the people who might object to RPGs havent usually played the games or checked them out. Personally with the tech out there now I'd be playing World of Warcraft or Fable. Theyre fun games, if you want some great bonding time sit with him and ask about the game.

this game is still out there?! wow. am i getting old. aside from the more occultic elements, i would have to advise against it, from the standpoint, that he will just be sitting there and veging out. its like when my son wanted to get guitar hero. i told him i had a perfectly good guitar downstairs if he wanted to play. why just sit an play a game. too many youngsters are not getting enough daily activity in their lives. i know. i can out p.t. some of the younger soldiers. id tell him no, and have him pick up a better hobby, with some future in it. even if its just for personal growth. take the guitar for instance.....

thank you Freeatlast. also, there is the danger of blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. not to mention addiction. just look at what has happened with some of the online games out there. people would rather lose their jobs, their homes their families rather than give some of this stuff up. life is way to short to be sitting there doing nothing of value, that will build us up. and it would take away time i could use to serve others, and prepare for the coming kingdom. Peace

my son did set me up with an account on runescape. the only reason i agreed to it, is so i can keep in contact with him no matter where i am on the globe. im about 6300 miles from him right now, and it works great. i prefer to talk to him on skype though, that way i can see him! :type:
