"The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity"
    -- Psalm 5:5

For years I've been told that "God loves the sinner," yet the latter part of this verse seems to be telling me that He doesn't. (Note the bolded word. It doesn't say "works," but "workers.")

Can anyone explain what this verse is trying to tell us?

Not only there, but also Proverbs 5:16-19 and one or two other places.

It's also another prime example of "all" not meaning "each one." God commended His love toward me in that while I was yet a worker of iniquity, Christ died for me.

I believe this speaks of the justice of God. Compare it to John 3:18:

But, thanks be to God, when we accept the free gift of God's forgiveness found in Jesus Christ, we are no longer under this condemnation.

One aspect of the greatness of God is that, while hating sin, He still offers salvation to a lost and dying world!

ktn4eg, let's look at the whole chapter of Psalm 5:

Psa. 5:1 Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.

3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.

5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Psa 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
Josh.24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.
Psa. 37:23The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.

11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

You can read thoughout the OT and find where Israel(12 tribes of Jacob) rebelled against God, and they were placed into bondage by different countries. By their rebellion, God removed His hand from them, and they were "fair game" to their enemies. But, as soon as they pleaded from their hearts, He came in and rescued them. I think that this is a good example of what was written in verse five. As long as we will do His will, we will be a.o.k. But whenever we rebel against Him, watch out!!

Here is my final verse I will place in this thread, and I feel it's a doozy!!

1 Pet. 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

I pray that this helps!!

    Thanks Willis, :thumbs::thumbs:

"Seems to me", no one comes to scripture without some form(s) of biases and pressupposition. We all at times attempt to dissect each syllable, punctuation mark etc to squeeze out meaning, mostly meaning to support our own positions. Please, brothers, dont "zing" me with how important it is to study and do exegesis on scripture, that is not my contention, rather, sometimes in our zeal to exegete, perhaps we miss the simple meaning that was intended to be obvious to us in the first place. Sometimes, we are too consumed attempting to find the "apples of gold" that we miss the bowl.

    Mercy, peace and love.
