A mother in Tampa, Florida has admitted in detail to killing her two teen-aged children, police said.

Police checking on the family at the request of a relative found Julie K. Schenecker, 50, on the back porch of her home Friday morning, dressed in blood-covered clothing, according to a police statement.

They found her son, Beau Powers Schenecker, 13, dead in the family's SUV, which had been parked in the garage, the statement said. Calyx Powers Schenecker, 16, was in an upstairs bedroom, also dead.

"She did tell us that they talked back, that they were mouthy," Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy told CNN affiliate WTSP. "But I don't think that will ever serve as an explanation to the rest of us of how you could take a child's life."

The woman shot her son as she drove him to soccer practice and returned home to shoot her daughter as she studied on her computer, CNN affiliate WFTS reported, citing investigators.

Police were called to the house after Schenecker's mother called to express concern about her daughter's welfare, saying she was depressed, the police statement said.

Schenecker was initially booked into jail, but was transferred to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of an existing medical condition, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, according to WTSP.

Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil on Friday night in memory of the siblings, according to WTSP.

"It's just sad that his mom did this to him and his sister because he didn't deserve this," one of the mourners, Hailey Johnson, told WTSP. "He was the sweetest kid ever."

I'll explain my view with a personal experience. Forgive the wordiness. There are always previous signs of mental imbalance before such an incident. As is most often the case, other people in her life likely made excuses for her behavior & ignored glaring red flags.

I have an ex-cop brother who went was caught leading a wickedly adulterous & abusive double life two years ago. Over the next couple of weeks, he threatened to murder several people, endangered his family, held a gun to his wife's head & attacked me at a family gathering. After spending a few months in jail, he claimed to have been healed by God & converted back to IFB; from which several of us have escaped. Our mother & other IFB family members have since circled the wagons & are blaming the devil for all of his actions.

At a gathering with our siblings(8 of us) after our dad's funeral a year ago, he went manic again; blaming his ex for his problems & trying to attack me. He spent two hours attacking the salvation of everyone who stood against his violent behavior & calling down God's judgement on myself & others; accusing me of being led by satan against him. Our mother & other IFB family members are still making excuses for his behavior; claiming that Satan is working against him for now trying to do what is right. Ironically, I warned him about the arrogant & destructive influence of the IFB while he was in jail. As a power hungry master of manipulation, he found it to be the perfect denomination for himself.

One day, he WILL injure or kill someone, and all the Christian in his life will say that they don't understand how it could have happened. This is what happens in the life of every mentally unstable person that kills those they should love the most for "no good reason". The Christians in their lives are as clueless as a rock as to what went wrong. It is a gross lack of Bible-based discernment in the pulpits & in the pews. They can spot a long-haired, NIV reading, smoking, rock music listening, tattooed, Sunday-morning Christian in the next county & openly judge them by name, but they can't see the evil that is in their own midst.

I know that the IFB aren't the only denomination with this problem, but they are the predominant one in our area of the country. And this may seem like just another anti-IFB rant, but the underlying truth is no less true regardless of the name on the church building. God stands in opposition to such persons & our culture is reflecting it. This may seem harsh or a little off topic, but we will continue to see a rise in such behavior as long as we continue to ignore the real cause of our country's spiritual ills; shallow, self-serving churches.

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"

There is not enough information to have any kind of judgment whatever. Bottom line: mom's gotta pay.

My first question was, Where's the father?

Yes. And once again we IFBs appear to be the source of all evil in American Christianity.

I thank God I know many IFB pastors and missionaries and believers who are nothing like what is described by Michael. There are about 10,000 IFB churches in America alone. It's sad to me that a few bad apples are used to characterize the whole, so that people "escape" from us "cultic" IFBs.

This is such a sad and tragic story!
We need to pray for this mother,( yes, where was her husband?)
she needs the Lord and she needs us believers to show her God's love.
Yes, she commit a crime of murder.
Let us be moved with compassion to find those who are dealing with pressures and be a friend to them and pray for them. Do what the Lord leads you to do to help someone today! Yes, God loves this mother and her deceased teenaged children.
Make me a blessing to someone today!!

From the story I read the husband is in the military and deployed at the moment.

From the pics I saw of woman on the news, it is obvious that she has had some sort of break with reality. I base this on the knowledge of how my own mother behaved, spoke and physically reacted (by that I mean things like shaking, etc) when she had a break.

Yes, I'm guessing Micheal is correct and there were warning signs that were ignored by those around her. A good many of my mother's warning signs were ignored until the day she picked a gun and threatened my father with it. She had threatened me a few years before (I was 15), yet I knew no one at the time who would have believed me. I went so far as to talk to my pastor's wife once, believing that would help, yet was utterly ignored. (We attended a Freewill Baptist church at the time)

However, this is not a church led or church caused issue. The mentally ill have MORE rights than the general population. This is because of the abuses of the past, when there was little proof required in order to have someone committed and in many cases people were committed based on the amount of money that changed hands with those in power. Many a wife or an elderly parent was committed by those who had nefarious reasons even though they were not "mentally ill".

Nowdays, the patient must have legal representation NO MATTER WHAT, in order to be committed for more than 24 hours and can only be committed for that long if it is demonstrated that they are a danger to themselves or others. (even when my mother held a gun on my father, she would have been released 24 hours later without a judge's decree)

What this means is that a person who is mentally disturbed has to commit a crime before they receive treatment "against their will" and a good many mentally ill people have no clue as to what it means to live "normal" and see no reason to go to therapy (my mother claimed therapy was all nonsense) or take the meds (she finally progressed to the point where it was take the meds or be committed by a judge's order.)

Who pays all the lawyers and court costs? I'll tell you who: the patient's family! And its expensive. Insurance doesn't cover those costs and on top of that in patient care for a mentally is usually limited to 20 days and after that? The family pays. That's all well and good if one has the money, but my father made little above poverty level when I was a teen. There was no way he'd have been able to afford it. As it is, he's paid many thousands trying to keep her contained.

Until mental health care law is completely and entirely overhauled and better methods of diagnosis are discovered, tragedies like this will continue to occur.

    Update From the Net

Report: Mom hit teen daughter before shooting
Florida woman accused of killing her 2 teenagers ordered held without bail

TAMPA, Florida — A suburban Florida soccer mom showed signs of trouble in the months before she was accused of killing her two teenage children: Her 16-year-old daughter told police in November she had been hit by her mother, and troopers investigating a car crash thought the woman had been using drugs.

The incidents were described in reports released Monday, several days after authorities say Julie Powers Schenecker, 50, shot and killed the kids because they were talking back and being "mouthy."
Story: Mom charged in teens' slayings out of hospital

Investigators found her soaked in blood Friday on the back porch of the family's upscale home. Later that day, at a county jail, Schenecker shook uncontrollably, her eyes wide.

Investigators said 16-year-old Calyx and 13-year-old Beau had each been shot twice in the head a day earlier — Beau in the family's car on the way to soccer practice, Calyx in her room as she studied at her computer

Both teens were killed with a .38-caliber pistol, which authorities say Schenecker bought five days earlier.

Schenecker was ordered held without bail Monday during a brief court hearing. She did not speak — though she did cry and hold a tissue, her hands bound by handcuffs.

Neither Schenecker nor her husband, Parker — an Army intelligence officer who was working in the Middle East when the shootings happened — had a criminal record.

Parker Schenecker served in Munich from 1986 to 1990; his wife worked there from 1987 to 1992 as a Russian linguist involved in military intelligence, wrote an author identifying himself as Parker Schenecker on an online forum for military personnel.

The family moved to Tampa in 2008 when Parker Schenecker was transferred to U.S. Central Command headquarters, which oversees the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and is housed at MacDill Air Force Base.

Friends and neighbors recalled a perfect family, whose Facebook photos showed a radiant foursome posing in Santa hats and decked in white near a pier.

On Nov. 6, though, trouble arose.

Calyx called police, telling officers her mother hit her as she drove home in the family car, according to a Department of Children and Families report. The teen also told officers that her mom had hit her about a month and a half before.

Two days later, Schenecker was in a car crash not far from her Tampa home. Officers on the scene wrote that Schenecker "showed signs of drug impairment," including dilated pupils with no reaction to light and "mush-mouthed speech."

As an IFB, I'm offended by the generalized comments by michael and really don't appreciate it. My church sounds nothing like the one he described but I will admit, in my church they don't approve of long hair, tattoos, or rock music in which I'm in agreement with. I don't agree with their stance on women not wearing pants but I respect it.

I posted a response to this same incident on another forum, I's like to repost here...

    Two quick points...

One, if there was a Blue Star or similar group in her area for assisting Deployed singled moms... Why didn't she avail herself of it.

Two, yes this world needs Jesus. But, if the church isn't actively involved in seeking the families of deployed troops more of this will happen.

    Children need dads, especially teens.

People who are not Military do not understand how special Military Spouse, especially wives, are.

This is *NOT* a job for just anyone.

And, I suspect, many try to tough it out even though help is available.

BTW, 50 is around the time many women start or are going through menopause.

This is *NO* time to have teenagers in the house...

And, no time to have a weapon of any kind where she could get to it...

This lady needed help. And, I'll bet there were many warning signs before she "went off".
