Saw this recently on a church's outdoor sign by a busy road:

"What part of 'thou shalt not' don't you understand" - God

What do you think about this? Is this an appropriate way to bear witness to the God whose name we bear?

It seems to me to be sarcastic and moralistic. Thoughts?

I agree. I think it will turn a lot of seekers away.

And NO, I do not agree with seeker friendly churches. I'm sure someone will fling that one at me.

Neither do I, but to me, this very clearly demonstrates the other side of an unbalanced gospel - one devoid of grace and mercy. Not to mention that it's a pure, straight moralism.

Pure straight moralism is bad? I think the sign just is intended to to make folks think about what they are doing are even accepting as bad. Societies start their downfall when they start calling bad - good and good - bad. That is exactly what is happening today. I see nothing wrong with it but I am not a liberal either. The problem with alot of churches now days is the message that seems to say "live however you want because there is plenty of grace and mercy. They are using the truth to tell a lie.

I'm certainly NOT a liberal, but using sarcasm in an attempt to draw people to Christ is un-Christlike.

I've seen that on in the OP on a billboard.

Another one I've seen is "Don't make me come down there!" -Jesus

I call those things bumper sticker religion. About the same level as my favorite:
"Tithe if you love Jesus. Anybody can honk."

I think these kind of messages are more appropriate for billboard advertising sponsored by a church association or denomination, rather than by a specific church.

I see it as an honest representation of the negative gospel which has pervaded so much of our Christian culture. It began with the great revivals & continues to this day. It is a gospel of judgement & damnation rather than of forgiveness & love.

Yes, Tom, I think I can agree with you. Even though there is a real message in the "bumper stickers". Most of the folks that get it, have already got it.

I am ANYTHING but a legalist. I am so far from being a legalist its ridiculous...but I have no problem with that sign at at all.

"What part of 'thou shalt not' do you not understand"?

    I like it! :wavey:

In our "live and let live" society there are a whole lot of people who need to understand that there are indeed moral absolutes.

    We should NOT kill babies.
We should NOT worship the "Money God"
We should NOT live for self
We should NOT pervert true sexuality

    etc etc etc

I have no problem with the sign at all. I dont see it as promoting legalism.

Its just making a point in a clever way.

John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

I prefer Scripture to catchy little religious phrases.

So what does the verse you quoted mean to you? How do you read it?

    Ashleysdad...

Thats fine, but its not one, or the other. Its not A or B. Its not a competition.

Its just different methods...with the same goal in mind. :wavey:

I find nothing wrong with the sign. So I don't see it pushing anyone away. If a person is real in their coming they desire God's commands. In fact most of society today has been put to sleep with this with this come to the loving Jesus teachings. They come but they do not repent because they do not know that God hates sin.
Also as to being sarcastic and moralistic. What is wrong with either if it gets someone to take wake up and notice? Telling people that Jesus loves them is not the whole truth. Some need a stronger cup of coffie.

Wow, this is a first Amy. You and I on different pages. Personally, I dont find anything "wrong" with the "slogan". I share John Topass's perspective that it may cause one to stop and consider...."Now what is it that God does and does not expect of my conduct". I like "seekers" (although I am not quite sure what is meant by this term) to me it is people who have questions about this "God thing", and I absolutely love attempting to help them understand, get aquainted with and meet the God of the Bible. Perhaps, that is the "teacher" in me. BTW, I am sure you also have picked up on the fact that I speak fluent sarcasm. :)
